LETTER: Charters promote competition

Posted on April 5, 2012April 4, 2012 by Staff

I was completely aghast at Christine Bischoff’s column (“Chartering Fast Track to Segregation”(The Carrboro Citizen, 3/22/12), and here is why: Ms. Bischoff is on a crusade to indoctrinate everyone into the cult of multiculturalism/diversity. “Diversity” is a mere word describing America; it was born in this country by our founding fathers. America is already a diverse nation that requires no political movement, yet that is what the writer is a part of.

Education is about learning, and not quotas. The student is best served when he or she has the convenience of waking up at a decent hour without having to rush to catch a bus simply to satisfy the diversity quota. Let the parent choose which school is the most convenient. Ms. Bischoff and her followers want forced busing even if it means inconveniencing the parents and their children.

As a “diversity” proponent, I assume Ms. Bischoff is pro-union as well. Thankfully, there are no unions at charter schools, which is just one of many reasons that they succeed. The students don’t care about diversity because they see themselves as colorblind individuals who treat each other with respect and dignity. In addition, charters have done wonders for competition. They reward teachers and fire bad ones. The administration is open to new ideas, and a vast majority of the parents have a tight relationship with their schools. They work with teachers and administration together to provide transportation and come up with creative solutions to their problems. How do I know this? I have two daughters who were in Woods Charter in Chapel Hill, quite simply the finest schools I have ever been a part of. Blacks, whites, Asians, Mexicans – charter schools have them all. Since they are a part of the public school system, charters are affordable for everyone. Judging by the waiting lists, there is a huge demand for this alternative education.

Competition is what the diversity proponents fear, for it may result in “inequality;” well, that’s tough. The hardest-working students get ahead; the others simply must work harder. Competition drives America, and you strive to live up to your potential regardless of skin color. Unions do not want this.

They want to dominate the entire educational landscape, which they have smothered in red tape and bureaucracy. For their own selfish reasons Bischoff isn’t concerned with the child’s education, but rather promoting her “diversity” agenda.
