Construction buds

A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer

Perhaps you are familiar with the pop-culture shorthand “peeps” for people. I’m referencing that because this week’s photo-haiku is not about the frighteningly outsized buildings sprouting all over town – it’s about peeps. As you drive by the construction site at 140 W. Franklin St., your eye is naturally drawn upward at the sheer enormity of the structure. But I find myself drawn to the construction workers clambering all over their Gulliver. Earlier this semester, undergraduate photojournalism student Ryan Cocca must have been seeing the same thing too when he photographed this pair. Posing for their environmental portrait, Dusty Blankenship (left) and Deek “Rodbuster” Simmons describe themselves as buds, a fact you can clearly see for yourself by their body language – almost like choreography. So don’t ever forget, whatever we may build, ultimately it’s all about peeps.
