A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer
For old Tar Heels of a certain vintage, this time of year is sure to conjure up memories of JUBILEE, that sweetly naïve and somewhat innocent spring campus music festival that featured bands including the Temptations, the Association, Spanky and Our Gang, Charlie Byrd and Jay and the Americans (pictured here). With your blanket and your date on the lawn of McCorkle or Polk Place, you’d be set. Whatever happened to JUBILEE? Some have said the late-‘60s drug scene did it in. Whatever, for my generation, JUBILEE provided an escape from worries about exams, graduation, the draft and Vietnam. I made this aerial shot over South Building for the Daily Tar Heel leaning out of an open-cockpit bi-plane.
