LETTER: Thankful for PORCH

Posted on August 30, 2012 by Staff

People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill and Carrboro Homes, or PORCH, is an all-volunteer, grassroots, nonprofit organization whose mission is to collect more food for the hungry in the community. We are writing in support of the PORCH Food for Families Program, as well as a new program designed to provide each of the schools in our district with supplemental snacks for students.

PORCH has been supporting Karen and Burmese families through their Refugee Relief Food Program for a couple of years, and they have been slowly expanding to serve more families in extreme poverty. All of the schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district have families who are living in extreme poverty. The additional food provided by PORCH, especially the fresh fruits, vegetables, milk and eggs, is an incredible resource for these families.

Although Chapel Hill is a resource-rich community, families need to know how to navigate many systems to get all the resources they need. Many of the families who are receiving support through PORCH are not only living in extreme poverty, but they are overwhelmed by the challenges of getting additional help due to various barriers such as low literacy skills, transportation issues, learning English as a second language, etc.

We are very grateful that PORCH’s Food for Families program is operating in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. PORCH has given school social workers food to give to families in extreme poverty before school breaks and snacks to use for children in poverty, and for this we are thankful on behalf of the children and families with whom we work.

We also are appreciative of the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service’s (IFC) food pantry (ifcweb.org), TABLE (tablenc.org) and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC (foodbankcenc.org), which are organizations that help families and children with whom we work with food assistance as well. IFC has a food pantry where families can receive monthly food help, TABLE provides food to children through local afterschool programs and the Food Bank of CENC provides food to CHCCS’ Child Nutrition Department to provide weekend backpacks to children in some of the CHCCS elementary schools. Through a variety of ways, all of these agencies help meet the food needs of the families and children we serve, and for this we thank them and the individuals, community and religious organizations that support them.
