A private plane crashed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Horace Williams Airport shortly before 3 p.m. today. Emergency responders have confirmed one fatality and two injuries.

The injured have been transported to UNC Hospitals; officials have listed one person in critical condition and the other in fair condition.

The airport has been closed temporarily to air traffic. The investigation will be conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board, which determines the cause of the crash. NTSB officials are expected to arrive tomorrow.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cirrus SR20 aircraft involved in the crash was registered in Wilmington, Del.

The airport is owned by UNC-Chapel Hill and has operated since the 1940s. Its functions include serving the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers Program, which is based at the School of Medicine and aims to improve access to primary health-care services around the state. The airport is located off Estes Drive Extension in Chapel Hill. The University plans to close the airport permanently so it can become part of the planned Carolina North project and relocate AHEC’s Medical Air Operations to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
