Scrapel Hill awards announced

You have two more weeks to see the winning works in the Scrapel Hill art contest at University Mall
At an artists’ reception, held last week, juror Nancy Judd announced the awards for the second-annual contest, which is sponsored by the mall and the Town of Chapel Hill to encourage residents to remember to recycle.

First place went to Greenville sculptor Austin Sheppard for his gestural figurative work titled “See No Evil”; second place to Chapel Hill educator Jane L. Bergman for her underwater seascape titled “Hidden Cost,” and third place to Durham designer Tom Dawson for his large sculptural piece “Sign Wave.” Award amounts were $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000 respectively. At the event, Judd also revealed her site-commissioned work for University Mall and Madison Marquette, “Tireless Couture” to be displayed at the mall through the end of December.

Exhibit visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite pieces for the People’s Choice Award ($500), which will be announced in a closing ceremony on 2ndFriday Artwalk, Nov. 12.

Mall visitors can pick up ballots throughout the mall and drop their votes in the ballot box located at the customer service desk or may visit University Mall’s Facebook page (facebook.com/UniversityMall) vote.
