Police make arrest in arson case

Posted on November 18, 2010 by Staff

CARRBORO – After quickly determining that a fire last Thursday at a home in the Weatherhill Pointe complex was likely set intentionally, Carrboro police arrested a Durham man, charging him with arson and other crimes in connection with the incident.

Paul Victor Martin, 48, of 412 Maynard Ave. in Durham was arrested Friday and charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and second-degree arson at a group home located at 109 Weatherhill Point.

Sgt. Chris Atack said Martin apparently had had a relationship with one of the five women who lived in the group home, which is run by Oxford House, a program that helps people recovering from addiction problems.

Atack said Martin was trying to get back together with the woman.

“She did not want to and he didn’t take that too well,” Atack said, adding that items taken by Martin from the house belonged to the woman.

SBI arson investigators are still working on the case, Atack said, but soon after getting to the scene firefighters and police officers found that the house had been broken into and gathered enough evidence to suggest arson.

Atack said residents at the house indicated that Martin may be involved. He was arrested a day later at his residence in Durham and is being held at the Orange County jail on $100,000 secured bond.
