The Carrboro Citizen has announced that Susan Dickson will take over as editor of the paper beginning May 5.
Dickson served as a staff writer for the Citizen from its inception in March 2007 until May 2009, and again from March 2010 to the present.
“This is an engaged community, with many of its residents involved in every aspect of the town,†Dickson said. “I couldn’t be prouder or more excited to take on this role, and look forward to the challenge of serving this community.â€
Since last March, Kirk Ross has served as news and opinion editor and Taylor Sisk as managing editor. Dickson will be assuming the majority of those duties. Both Ross and Sisk will serve as contributing editors and will continue to be regular voices in the newspaper.
“I hope to write a regular column until I turn 85 or so, and otherwise contribute to the paper,†Ross said. He intends to concentrate on writing about state politics and public policy. He is also publishing a North Carolina almanac.
Sisk will continue to write features and some news stories for the Citizen. He will otherwise be doing freelance work in North Carolina and beyond.
The Carrboro Citizen was launched by publisher Robert Dickson and Ross. At the outset, 5,000 papers were distributed throughout Carrboro. Since that time, circulation has increased to 7,000 and papers are now distributed in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Pittsboro.
“I greatly appreciate what Kirk and Taylor have contributed to this paper over the past four years,†Robert Dickson said, “and I’m really excited about this transition and moving forward with expanded coverage for our community.
“The response of our readers to our efforts has been so gratifying. We feel good about the future of community journalism.â€
“I’ve seen this paper grow over the past few years, and I’d like to continue to build upon what Kirk Ross and Taylor Sisk have created,†Susan Dickson said. She encourages readers to stop by the office to propose story ideas, offer news tips or simply to say hello.
