A welcome from Superintendent Forcella

Posted on August 25, 2011 by Staff

The following is a letter to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools community from new Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Superintendent Tom Forcella.

As the new superintendent of schools for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, it is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the 2011-12 school year. I began my duties on July 1, and my time since then has been busy, informative, productive and enjoyable. If my first few weeks are an indication, I believe we are in store for a very positive school year. I certainly feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a dedicated, knowledgeable and supportive staff and community. It is obvious to me that the people who live and work in Chapel Hill and Carrboro place great value in maintaining a high-quality public education system.

Over the last several weeks, I have worked closely with administrators and school board members in an effort to better understand the parent programs and the critical issues that are crucial to the continued success of our schools. Meetings with community leaders and education-focused organizations have provided an initial perspective of the school district’s strengths, as well as areas that will require attention. These meetings will be expanded and continued into the fall.
Due in large part to the outstanding work that has been accomplished on all educational fronts over the last several years, the schools are in a very good place as we set the direction for long-term educational excellence. A major goal this year is to review the expiring Strategic Plan and establish a successor long-range plan that will serve as the cornerstone for decision-making in our schools for the next several years. Prior to embarking on this initiative, it is important to hear from all stakeholders including parents, students, teachers, staff members, administrators, school board members and community members. It is my hope that, by working collaboratively with a shared vision and unified focus, we will create the best possible learning opportunities for all our students.

Finally, to become one of the few truly great school districts where all kids are learning at higher levels, it will take a steadfast commitment from all stakeholders. By building a positive culture of excitement and promise that is focused on instruction and learning, truly amazing things can happen.

I am looking forward to working with you.

Sincerely,
Tom Forcella
Superintendent
