LETTER: Support the PTA Thrift Shop

Posted on September 29, 2011September 28, 2011 by Staff

As this community faces drastic budgetary constraints, we must work together to find ways to offset the impact this has had and will have on our educational system. For the past 60 years, the PTA Thrift Shop has been a foundation of support for our schools. They annually distribute more than $200,000 of essential funds to every elementary, middle and high school in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro system.

Those dollars are then meted out by individual PTAs for needs that would otherwise not be met. Last year, Carrboro High School received more than $14,000, which meant teacher supplies, electronic readers for the library, scholarships and support for clubs such as their award-winning school paper.

Now the PTA Thrift Shop is asking for our help. The Carrboro facility is inadequate and simply cannot meet all the distribution and storage needs. The building campaign envisions not only enough space for the PTA Shop but also office spaces that can be leased to produce even more income. With a greater capacity for donations, more jobs can be generated and this self-sustaining operation can further benefit our community.

As the number of schools increases, the PTA Shop has to grow or the proceeds become more and more diluted; and every dollar matters in this period of economic chaos. Every student that has entered in this school system has benefited from the PTA Thrift Shop. Every single student. This isn’t a matter of another nonprofit asking for donations. This is a matter of investing in the future of our children, one that is guaranteed to bypass the politics of budget cuts.

The Thrift Shop has made it easy for all of us to give. They established a 12×12 plan where we can give just $12 every month for 12 months. That’s a couple fewer trips to Starbucks. That’s eating a bowl of cereal instead of buying a pizza. That’s a yes vote for our children and for this community.

Please care enough today to make tomorrow just a little better.
