County, Carrboro revisit library

Posted on October 13, 2011 by Staff

The Orange County Board of Commissioners will revisit discussions about the Southwest Branch of the Orange County Library in a joint meeting with the Carrboro Board of Alderman today (Thursday).

Plans to construct a library in Carrboro at 210 Hillsborough Road to serve Southwestern Orange County came to a halt on Aug. 23, when the board of commissioners voted unanimously to terminate the purchase and sales agreement for the property.

Last week, commissioners looked at site-selection criteria for the proposed library with county staff.

Proposed criteria state that the location of the library must be in a place that provides service to the largest amount of residents and is in an area that would maximize its use, which would make the library more valuable than the initial investment in the building.

Site criteria also include a screening process to help evaluate different land parcels based on site capacity, visibility and ease of access.

These criteria will be presented to the aldermen for their comments and to instigate discussion between the two boards.

The meeting will be held at the Southern Human Services Center at 2501 Homestead Road at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
