Those Other Faces, Halloween 2011

A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer

So often we assume we know the people we see every day. And then one day, they appear as someone else. As adults, that’s the fun of Halloween – when “children of all ages” get a shot at being Spock, or a gypsy fortune teller, or a Tar Heel Scrabble game. So it was with the wait staff at Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe, that iconic Franklin Street breakfast mecca I frequent on such a regular basis that a “Jock Special” starts on the grill the moment I hit the front door. This Halloween, my changelings include, left to right, Beau Redding (cool dude), K.T. Bruton (Bobby socks girl), Bettie Moore (Scrabble), Teresa Burnette (gypsy) and Matt Mader (Spock).
