LETTER: Vote Price for District 2

Posted on May 3, 2012May 2, 2012 by Staff

County government is important, especially to District 2 voters. Since most of us don’t live in towns, county government is all we have to represent us. It’s important to elect commissioners who value our input and are committed to engage all citizens in critical decisions impacting services, infrastructure and taxes.

We support Renee Price for county commissioner, District 2. Renee has an impressive track record of working with and for the citizens of Orange County. She’s committed to creating real dialogue because she knows that our issues are complicated, and that meaningful citizen input takes more than three-minute statements at county commissioner meetings.

We can rely on Renee to make sure District 2 is represented on taxes as well as other important issues. She’s particularly sensitive to the growing cost of Orange County’s government and knows that all forms of taxes and fees impact household budgets and county businesses. Renee would not vote to place a countywide sales tax in an off-year election, like last November, when most District 2 residents wouldn’t have cause to vote.

In leadership roles on the Planning Board and Commission for the Environment, Renee placed citizen advocacy front and center. For Renee, it was essential for her boards to hear citizens’ perspectives on issues such as UNC’s airport, the waste-transfer station, OWASA’s logging plan and other issues that have threatened District 2 communities over the last few years. Where possible, Renee gave citizens a slot on the agenda where we could engage openly and candidly with board members. She led the grassroots effort to stop N.C. 86 from disturbing the natural areas of Ayr Mount and the Occoneechee Speedway Trail – an effort that was later validated by NCDOT and the Town of Hillsborough.

Above all, Renee is an exemplary citizen. She will lead the way to find new and effective ways to work with the citizens of Orange County. Renee values our input and wants to hear from us. If we elect her, citizens can look forward to town hall meetings and other forums that allow us to engage fully in important decisions that impact our communities and quality of life.

Whether it’s economic development, tax policy or education, Renee will work collaboratively to find creative and forward-looking solutions that work for our diverse and growing community. Please vote on May 8 (or in early voting), and vote for Renee Price.
