Letter: Vote Allison

Posted on May 15, 2008 by Staff

Leo Allison is the better choice to fill the Orange County Board of Commissioners position in the June 24 run-off election because he is caring, thorough and a tireless contributor to the community he has loved since childhood. And, he is known to do his homework!

At Efland-Cheeks Elementary, “our school,” where we both volunteer for RSVP, who would ever guess Leo’s credentials as he checks in early Wednesday mornings at the bell, regular as the school year, same as he has done for eight years? (We began the same year.)

The kids adore this grandfatherly soul who listens and probes to discover their needs as together they grapple with math. (His career began as a high school physics and math teacher.) The children would never believe that their soft-spoken friend had been an IBM quality-control manager with a $15 million budget and a large staff!

Beyond this, Leo’s history of caring commitment and consensus building includes participation and leadership roles in many organizations – among them, the comprehensive, five-year Orange County Task Force for Shaping Orange County’s Future; Legal Aid of North Carolina (as treasurer, then the first non-attorney named to serve as chair); Orange County Planning Board (chair); Department of Social Services board; Orange County Task Force for Central Orange Senior Center Design and Development and its bond drive; Orange Congregations in Mission board (chair, treasurer); Orange-Alamance Water System board; the ABC Board; the Human Rights and Relations board; United Voices of Efland (chair); and AME Gaines Chapel (trustee, steward, class leader).

The Efland-Cheeks teachers wanted to formally endorse Leo’s candidacy but found they could not – BUT I CAN! So, please vote “Leo Allison” as another effective voice for our Orange County Board of Commission in the June 24 run-off election! (Early voting begins June 5.)
