Letter to the editor: Act misnamed

Posted on December 23, 2008 by Staff

I am writing concerning my grave concerns about the woefully misnamed Employee Free Choice Act, also known as card check.

The Employee Free Choice Act is a bill aimed at shoring up failing labor unions. Instead of giving workers the freedom to vote by secret ballot, the Employee Free Choice Act would change the rules so that unions could organize a workplace simply by persuading a majority of workers to sign authorization cards.

Not only would the bill let unions muscle their way into a business, but if contract talks between the union and an employer stall, then federal bureaucrats could step in and dictate wages and other benefits – exactly the kind of thing we can’t afford in the midst of the worst recession in memory.

Forced contracts and Washington-style politics in the American workplace? I think the bill should be renamed the Employee FORCED Choice Act.
