Letter to the editor: Good start

Posted on December 23, 2008 by Staff

Thank you for your 12/22 article on the green collar economy. Readers will also be interested to learn that the Carrboro Board of Aldermen made our top economic development priority for 2008 “to explore green collar business development.”

In working toward that end, Economic Development director James Harris attended last April’s “Green for All” Conference in Memphis, Tenn. There he heard from green jobs pioneers like Van Jones and Majora Carter. He also made connections and has continued to meet with green jobs activists from around the Triangle who are meeting to promote a regional and state agenda for green collar jobs.

In addition, James has met with the educators at Central Carolina Community College and at CHCCS to begin connecting educational programs with job opportunities. In September, as part of a national initiative, James organized a Green for All event during the Carrboro Farmers’ Market where green product and service providers were able to meet with the public. The town is also working on adding green jobs criteria to the the town’s Revolving Loan Fund.

All of the above are just first steps for Carrboro but represent good progress by our Economic Development Department.

So, how many green jobs have actually been created so far?
