Letter to the editor: Article lacking

Posted on April 2, 2009April 2, 2009 by Staff

I found the article about the Chapel Hill Town Council’s Aydan Court decision of March 23 inadequate in its coverage of the actual facts of the meeting, beginning with the headline, “Tempers fly.”

One could say that the only temper displayed that evening was that of developer Carol Ann Zinn, who despite Mayor Foy’s disclosure the previous week that he was inclined to turn down the proposed RSSC zoning that needed to be instated for the Aydan Court project to be built, directed her indignation toward the council.

The mayor and councilman Czajkowski responded firmly, but calmly, defending the decision. There could be no discussion of Aydan Court without the passage of the proposed zoning, as Czajkowski pointed out — without the zoning, no project of such density could be discussed for the proposed site.

The real danger here is that such a zoning might then serve as a future precedent. Not only is it inappropriate for such a project to be built on an ecologically sensitive site, given the density of a number of projects currently underway on the Highway 54 corridor, it seems particularly unnecessary at this point in time.

I, for one, am proud of the Town Council for taking a strong, independent stand in this instance. Indeed, I hope the message that reverberates throughout the community is that the Town Council has begun a new era of shaping a thoughtful debate about the future growth of Chapel Hill.
