Obituary: Pearl Hing Howe

Posted on June 4, 2009 by Staff

Pearl Hing Howe was born December 6, 1913 in China, one of a family of 13 brothers and sisters. She died Thursday, May 28, 2009 in her home in Chapel Hill, surrounded by her family.

Pearl immigrated to the US in 1948 to escape the Communist takeover of China. She and her husband, Lee Fun Howe, settled in Wilmington, where they raised their two children. She moved to Chapel Hill after Lee Fun’s death in 1979. Pearl is predeceased by her son, Lee Unwah Howe.

She is survived by her daughter, Lee Jeannie Howe Ambrose; son-in-law, Wallace Ambrose; granddaughter, Rebecca Ellen; and daughter-in-law, Ramona Hutton-Howe; and her daughters Lee Erin, Lee Emma and Lee Megan.
Pearl had a very fun-loving spirit and was enduring and optimistic throughout her life. She was gracious and giving, always offering refreshments to friends and family. It wasn’t a meal if it wasn’t warm and shared with someone. She was the neighborhood’s master gardener, the family’s mah-jongg expert, the world’s slowest bowler and mini-golfer and her grandchildren’s best playmate. She will be greatly missed by all of those whom she loved and nurtured.

Visitation at Walker’s Funeral Home will be Monday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a graveside service at 11 a.m. at Markham Memorial Gardens.

The family welcomes flowers, or contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill, 120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, (919) 942-3861 is assisting the Howe family.
