Sarah Honer believes Merge with Motion will show viewers something they’d never expect to see – indie rock kids dancing.
“Indie rockers have the reputation of not dancing and standing still, but there will be a lot of movement with this,†Honer, owner of Spira Pilates Studio in Carrboro, said.
Honer is co-producer and, as she puts it, “curator†of Merge with Motion, a dance performance that is part of Merge Record’s 20th anniversary celebration.
In Merge in Motion, choreographers and the Triangle Youth Ballet will perform original contemporary ballet, rhythm tap and modern dance.
Honer said she thought of this melding of indie and dance while driving around listening to Merge artist Caribou. She talked to Merge Record owners Mac McCaughan and Laura Balance to share her idea, and it was well-received.
Next came the who, what, when and where details, most of which Honer said were done by e-mail.
She sent a mixed CD with Merge artists, that was compiled by former Merge employee and Orange County Social Club owner Tricia Mesigian, to choreographers she trusted and told them to pick something they liked.
“I’ve thrown out a lot of boomerangs to choreographers that I trust and who the Triangle Youth Ballet trusts, and now that they’re coming back to me I’m overwhelmed at how great the show will be,†Honer said.
Honer said the time and effort that’s gone into putting together a show that will only be performed once is incredible. That one show will be Saturday, July 18 at the Carolina Theater in Durham.
