For the last two summers, CHCCS has constructed new schools. The opening of these new facilities dominated back-to-school news.
With community and economic growth slowing, the focus in the Facilities and Maintenance Department shifted to smaller infrastructure improvements at some of the district’s older buildings.
The roof of Carrboro Elementary’s Multipurpose Building was replaced, as well as the roof of the Lawler Building on the campus of Seawell Elementary. A severely deteriorated exterior staircase at Seawall was also replaced for safety reasons. Estes Hills Elementary School’s kitchen floor was replaced after significant repairs were made to the plumbing system to repair leaking floor drains and to comply with health requirements.
District-wide, smaller projects such as painting, floor tile/carpet replacements, and gym floor refinishing also were completed.
Staff who work in the district’s Lincoln Center Central Office were displaced from June to August as a new roof and windows were installed. These repairs were needed to replace the antiquated roof and window systems that leaked severely and were not energy-efficient.
The three roofing and window projects cost $858,545 and were included in the district’s Capital Investment Plan. These funds are allocated separately from the district’s operating budget and target the maintenance of district facilities.
