New sculpture on Town Commons

Posted on September 17, 2009 by Staff

Tamera Mulanix has designed and created a major work of metal art that she installed this summer on the Town Commons outside Carrboro’s Town Hall. The piece—which shines in different colors depending on the viewing angle—replaced a similar, but smaller piece that vandals had ripped down from the same site in early 2009.

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, local businesses teamed with local artists for the 5,000 Flowers Project, which featured art exhibits throughout Carrboro and Chapel Hill as commemorative reminders. Mulanix, of Pittsboro, built a nine-pointed Mandala entirely out of steel for this project. It was vandalized to the point of destruction in 2009, and Mulanix offered to build a bigger, sturdier piece that’s now on display.
