Meeting roundup

Posted on September 24, 2009 by Staff

The bulk of last Thursday’s Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board of Education meeting was devoted to Superintendent Neil Pedersen presenting his evaluation of the district’s 2008-09 priorities.

The first priority was to implement pyramids of intervention at each school. Pedersen highlighted tracking mechanisms being created, such as flags for monitoring such things as Ds and Fs on report cards or a high number of absences.

The second priority was to implement year-two strategies in the exceptional children’s improvement plan.

The third priority was to implement the major components of professional learning communities (PLCs), and Pedersen reported that nearly 90 percent of the district’s schools demonstrated improved results on the PLC annual survey.

The fourth priority was to conduct classroom walkthroughs and to use data to support appropriate professional development and instructional improvement. Pedersen reported that nearly 67 percent of the walkthroughs have been completed and more than 40 percent of schools reported instructional improvements as a result of sharing walkthrough data.

The fifth priority was to implement the positive behavior support program in all schools. Culbreth Middle and East Chapel Hill High are the only schools that still need to implement the program, but both schools demonstrated decreases in the number of suspensions. CHCCS has very low suspension rates, but none of the district’s schools posted the 10 percent reduction in suspensions that had been set as a goal.

The next board of education meeting will be Oct. 1 at 7.p.m. at the Chapel Hill Town Hall.
