Obituary – Charles William “Will” Steiner, II

Posted on September 6, 2007 by Staff

Charles William “Will” Steiner, II, age 43, died at his home on September 1, 2007. Steiner was proprietor of several Outback restaurants over the years, and will be remembered by those who worked for him as a caretaker whose kindness, integrity and generosity were unfailing. His outreach into the community took the form of charity events for many organizations and causes.

Steiner was the consummate outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, scuba dive, ride his four-wheeler and explore in his various watercraft. He was an accomplished cook and an animated and hilarious storyteller. He was adventurous, passionate about all of his interests, a joyful spirit and a loving and beloved husband,  son, brother and friend.

For those who loved him dearly, there are no words to describe how much he will be missed. We can only be grateful for all the times we had together.

Steiner leaves behind his adored wife, Wendy, loving parents, Robert Bashford and Ann Terhune, his step-parents, Ramsey Terhune and Cynthia Bashford, and his brothers, Jonathan, Bear, David, Dylan, Graham and Taylor, and his faithful canine companions, Rip and Macey.

There will be a memorial service at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill on Thursday, September 6 at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in the churchyard. There will be a reception to greet the family in the church dining room after the burial.

Arrangements are by Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill, 120 W. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

My husband and I have known Will since he opened the Outback Steakhouse in Salisbury, NC and up until he left to open another store in the Raliegh area. His antics, funny stories and passion for details will be sorely missed by us. We were deeply saddened to hear of his unexpected and sudden passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy and all of Wills’ family members. We miss you already Will!

I only have known Will for 1 night and 1 morning, BUT he has never been away from my thoughts ever. Here is our story: I was on my way to visit a friend down south,(I am from NJ) and I was involved in a car accident with another person. This happened near Anderson S.C. around Valentines Day 1995 the Daytona 500 was also happening. The other car and I slid off the road into a deep 10 ft or so ditch. The cars were totaled, when I came to the other lady was up on the highway signaling for help. Another couple stopped by and said they saw the accident and were on their way to Daytona. The other ANGEL was the man known to me as Will Steiner. Without so much as a blink he asked me If I had a place to stay and I told him “no” I was on my way to see a friend and had no way home either. THIS ANGEL said come with me you can stay at my home. If I remember correctly he may have had a white jeep at the time, or some type of SUV. He had a very nice home and 1 dog if I remember, and was single at the time. I think? He gave me something to eat and let me stay in one of the rooms. In the morning he took me to the airport and I caught a plane to my destination. He gave me extra money so I could make it back to school. I told him I would pay him back when I could and I did after I got home on a vacation from school. I don’t know why I looked his name up on google. I guess I just wanted to say thanks if he was on facebook or something. I did not expect to see his obituary. I am deeply sorry for his family and loved ones. I have shed my tears and prayed for him also. HE WAS A VERY KIND, UNSELFISH AND GENEROUS MAN. THANK YOU WILL STEINER. (I still remember him saying hey I’m Will and I am opening a restaurant called Outback Steakhouse and he gave me a business card.):)

Willy T was my roommate In the late 80’s and early 90’s. I considered him to be my best friend. I was shocked to hear of his passing, I’ve tried to get up with him but all his numbers were changed. I figured he had moved to Mexico and openned up a gas station between the ocean and a duck migrating area. Will said that way he could get whatever he needed from the station, sport fish in the summer and duck hunt in the winter. Will was a great person and always the llife of the party. I feel like part of my past is now missing. May God bless his family for their loss. I’ll miss you Willy T
