Towns, UNC agree on Google plan

Posted on March 18, 2010 by Staff

Chapel Hill, Carrboro and UNC will coordinate an application to Google to be a pilot area for the Internet search giant’s high-speed fiber optic project.

The company is seeking local government partners to assist in the installation of a faster network infrastructure. The local partnership is one of several in North Carolina and dozens nationwide vying for the projects.

At a public forum at Chapel Hill Town Hall Monday, residents encouraged the towns and UNC to push for the project, saying it could attract new businesses and improve productivity and competitiveness.
