A waif of a plant
Several weeks ago, Raleigh friend Margaret Schucker emailed to me a plant image with this inquiry: “What is this? I found it growing out of a crack in the sidewalk and came home and threw it into the ground. It looks sort of like a poinsettia, but obviously not on steroids. If it’s not some kind of horrible, invasive thing, I will leave it there. It’s great to have anything that blooms in this heat. Plus I didn’t have to do anything to help it along. Good quality in a plant!â€

Board rethinks its position on Veridia

Transparency lacking in suspensions
The remaining football players may eventually be found to have broken either school or NCAA rules and thereby forfeit their privilege to play. But their cases will be conducted behind closed doors.
The lesson has been that they have no rights. Yes, playing ball is a privilege, but being robbed of it should not occur without an open and fair hearing that follows due process.

The latest poverty data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday was unfortunately not a surprise, showing significant increases in the number of people living in poverty across the country and in North Carolina in 2009.

Clarification
A story in the Sept. 9 edition of The Citizen incorrectly stated how funds from a potential quarter-cent sales tax would be used after the initial five years of collection. The commissioners are still reviewing how those funds would be used after the first five years and have yet to take action.
