McDougle Elementary School will host an African-American Read In Day on Jan. 16. The event, sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English, focuses on literacy and black literary culture. A number of school administrators and other community members are expected to read to students from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

McDougle Middle School teacher Janet Ploghoft was named a 2008 Teacher of Excellence by the Exceptional Children Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She was recognized last month at an awards ceremony at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.
