By Beth Mechum Staff Writer It started with a dispute about an apartment, and it led to a heated exchange Tuesday night between farmers and town government officials at the Carrboro Board of Aldermen meeting. Opinions were plenty at Town Hall, and though no resolutions were passed, many are hopeful it’s the start of improved…

Varsity Theatre fire, 1966
With the Varsity Theatre being in the news lately, I couldn’t help but recall another time of crisis for the Franklin Street landmark. In the wee hours of Nov. 16, 1966, the sight of an angry red sky out my Henderson Street apartment window jolted me awake. Grabbing my Rolleicord and Braun strobe unit, I…
Chill is in the air at Antarctic exhibit
By Valarie Schwartz It could have been the refrigerated air pulsing into the upstairs room at the Ackland Art Museum. Or the effect of Nerys Levy’s paintings of the Antarctic. Either way, the chill was appropriate during Levy’s discussion “The Process of Time and the Problem of Cold.†The first in this summer’s series of…

For the record: Lessons unlearned
Ten more years (well, maybe 20) — that’s all the people’s representatives of Orange County and Chapel Hill ask of the historically black neighborhood saddled with a landfill some 37 years ago. Ten years was all they were asked back then, after all. But by golly, through recycling and composting and making that landfill bigger…
The battle for clean elections continues
Chris Fitzsimon Supporters of clean and fair elections are coming to Raleigh Wednesday to urge state lawmakers to expand public financing to more Council of State and local government races. You would think providing campaign funds for candidates who’d rather not owe special interests anything after they are elected wouldn’t be that controversial.

Letter: Paper should report the facts
Shame on The Carrboro Citizen! Shame on you! Shame on Mark Chilton! Any doubt about whether Carrboro’s recent loan to The Carrboro Citizen would bias it by enabling pandering to the town’s leadership was surely set to rest by your decision to disregard, as its editor, objectivity and professionalism when you decided to publish Mr….
