Cigarette butts counted
Following up on two cigarette litter scans conducted by the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership in 2008, students from the anti-smoking alliance TRU hit the bricks in May collecting and counting cigarette butts on Franklin Street.
New cable lineup
Time Warner recently announced an extensive revamping of its channel lineup. The new lineup will launch in Chapel Hill and Carrboro on June 16, according to the company.
Board member sought
The Town of Hillsborough is recruiting a volunteer from the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction to serve on the Planning Board. Applications for the vacancy should be filed via the town’s website by June 10.
Interstate 40 repairs
The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced that pavement repair operations have begun that will require the closure of I-40 westbound to through traffic overnight between N.C. 86 at Mile Marker 266 and the I-85/I-40 merge at Mile Marker 259.

Waldrop named provost
Tony Waldrop, a researcher and former UNC track star who returned to his alma mater in 2001 to lead development efforts, has been named provost of the University of Central Florida.
