I am chagrined that Senate Bill 460 has once again failed to pass. The bill is simple in nature, intended to have the regulations that already exist for pet shops and animal shelters be extended to puppy mills operated by commercial breeders.

FROM THE EDITOR: Parched
Quite warm, humid and rainless weather has returned, and with it a reminder of the importance of water this time of year. As you may have recently read in our newspaper, conservation and infrastructure demands have led the Orange Water and Sewer Authority to enact another rate increase.
FROM THE EDITOR: The 7,000 Club
We didn’t exactly get out the trumpets for the event, but you may have noticed a small article a couple of weeks ago in our business section about our circulation increase.

A serious setback for N.C.’s recovery
As measured by gross domestic product growth alone, the recovery began nearly 10 months ago. But tell that to the more than 470,000 North Carolinians still without work. Tell the policymakers struggling to balance a budget in the face of declining revenue, and you are likely to get a chuckle.
In the heat of summer, a call for cooler heads in political discourse

Paved greenway has advantages
Paving will prevent the rutting which provides the loose soil that washes into the creek – the major cause of stream degradation. Users will stay on the pavement, minimizing collateral damage to tree roots, shrubs and herbaceous plants.
One-and-done: how to encourage them to stay

Thanks for Flora
I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy Ken Moore’s Flora column. It’s always well presented and informative, and it’s one of the reasons I look forward to reading The Citizen each week. His recent columns on pollinators made me pay special attention to a spectacle I have always enjoyed, that of watching…
Study the Bolin Creek plan
The outcome of debate on Carrboro’s Bolin Creek Greenway Plan will last for generations. Participation by a well-informed citizenry is very important. Reading and understanding the plan is critical. The full report is available from the Town of Carrboro online and at advocatesforcarrborogreenways.org. The advocates’ website also contains a link to the Carrboro staff analysis…
On environment and competing interests
I’m writing to express my dislike of the idea of paving the route along the most sensitive parts of Bolin Creek, as recommended to the Carrboro Greenways Commission by Greenways Inc. of Durham. My first reaction on hearing news of this plan was, “If you want that, move to Cary.â€
Anti-deficit fever could cripple economic recovery
The anti-deficit fever rippling through Congress threatens to jeopardize the modest recovery that we’ve begun to experience in North Carolina and in other states.
The Language of Summer
Listen, it’s summer. We’ve all melted a bit. The dog pants more. The pace is a summer pace and the language is a summer language.
