I think the Orange County commissioners need to gather more knowledge and weigh more feasible options before settling on the Howell property for the waste transfer site. I encourage them to solicit vendor proposals for disposal services for six to 12 months or longer. I think they must search for alternative sites using community input.

Letter: Dear commissioners
For years we have been receiving Waste Matters from the county which had good ideas and creative thinking on waste management. I am distressed that only [Commissioner Pam] Hemminger is courageous enough to be open minded on this very serious issue. Please consider more open minded and efficient ideas for dealing with the waste produced…
For the Record: A note from the editor
Saying goodbye to Rebecca Clark will not be easy. She was a larger than life figure, determined and sharp, with an infectious smile to the end of her days. The last time I spoke to her was on Nov. 5, the day after the election of the first black president. I asked her how Wednesday…
Letter: Story needed facts
I am very distressed about the portrayal of some of the events at Carrboro High School outlined in your piece “A hard year for the schools.†Although Mr. Thomas was ousted from Carrboro High School, it shouldn’t be overlooked that Mr. Thomas worked diligently for Carrboro High. While there were areas in which Mr. Thomas…
Letter: Lab expansion wrong
UNC is expanding its animal research labs and storage facilities. This is as backwards as ignoring solar energy to build more coal-burning power plants, since medical advances have rendered most animal research outdated. In 2008 Medical News Today reported advancements in human brain imaging were proving better at devising pain management for conditions like osteoarthritis…
Projects could harm Bolin efforts
Sharon Cook The Carrboro Board of Aldermen will soon be voting on a project that could negate countless hours of work by the Friends of Bolin Creek, along with wasting thousands of dollars of Carrboro taxpayer money that has already been spent on staff hours used to help identify conservation areas in the Upper Bolin…
Not so much change yet
Chris Fitzsimon The economy was center stage in Raleigh Monday, as Governor-elect Beverly Perdue announced the appointment of what she called her economic team and addressed state business leaders at the annual Economic Forecast Forum held by the North Carolina Chamber and the North Carolina Bankers Association.
A year of shock and sorrow
In many communities throughout the land, this year will be remembered mainly for the historic election of the first African-American president. In North Carolina, it will also be remembered as the year the state elected its first woman governor. For the first time in a generation, the state played a significant role in choosing a…
Community Q&A: What is local?
Last week in our editorial, we asked the question “What is Local?†Following are some our readers’ responses. Send your thoughts to editor@carrborocitizen.com You can read the editorial on our web site.
For the Record 12/24/08
What is local? We’re curious. We hear so much talk about buying local; supporting local; eating, breathing and existing local. And we get it, sort of. The benefits of doing much more closer to home are clear, especially from an environmental standpoint. And this paper is among the many encouraging support of our local economy….

Letter to the editor: Get me to the airport on time
Get me to the airport on time Chancellor Thorp confuses the Orange County community again (“no decision has been madeâ€). But this time, despite his self-proclaimed “analytical skills,†it may have backfired. Talbert & Bright have planned 64 airports in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast region over 15 years. Their 2005 UNC study was based on…
Letter to the editor: Good start
Thank you for your 12/22 article on the green collar economy. Readers will also be interested to learn that the Carrboro Board of Aldermen made our top economic development priority for 2008 “to explore green collar business development.â€
Letter to the editor: Act misnamed
I am writing concerning my grave concerns about the woefully misnamed Employee Free Choice Act, also known as card check.
Grinch me not
Pardon us for not delving into the controversy on campus over the Christmas decorations. We have it on good authority that the university leadership and the library administration do not hate Christmas and are not a part of the grand conspiracy against it.
