Photo #: S-584-176 Preliminary Design Plan for a "8250 Ton Scout" Cruiser, Scheme "d" ... March 16, 1921 Preliminary design drawing for a scout cruiser. This design was one of many considered in the long process of settling on the plans adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926. This sketch was one of a set of five alternative designs (see Photos # S-584-174 to S-584-178) presented to the General Board in March 1921. This design provided three twin 8-inch gun turrets, one forward and two aft. This plan differed from "Scheme # 1" (see Photo # S-584-174) in having reduced main battery armament, greatly reduced armor protection, and reduced speed, permitting major reductions in size and cost. This plan provided six 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 33 knots in a ship 560 feet long on the waterline, 52 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 8,250 tons. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
