Photo #: S-584-177 Preliminary Design Plan for a "10000 Ton Scout" Cruiser, Scheme "b" ... March 24, 1921 Preliminary design drawing for a scout cruiser. This design was one of many considered in the process of settling on the plans adopted for the Pensacola (CL-24) class of Fiscal Year 1926. This sketch was one of" a set of five alternative designs (see Photos # S-584-174 to S-584-178) presented to the General Board in March 1921. This design provided four twin 8-inch gun turrets, two forward and two aft. The drawing illustrated two alternative possible arrangements of deck armor protection. This plan differed from "Scheme # 1" (see Photo # S-584-174) in having greatly reduced armor protection, permitting reduced size and cost. This plan provided eight 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 34.5 knots in a ship 600 feet long on the waterline, 55 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 10,000 tons. Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
