Photo #: S-584-202 Light Cruiser ... Design # 5 ... January 23, 1925 Preliminary design plan for a cruiser to be built under treaty limitations covering ships of up to 10,000 tons treaty displacement. This drawing represents a design that met most General Board characteristics for a ship that might be built under the Fiscal Year 1924 building program. This design provided the same heavy main gun armament as the baseline design (see Photo # S-584-190) but sacrificed some speed to obtain light armor protection and reduced weights. This plan is similar to that provided in the earlier "Design # 4" (see Photo # S-584-199) but differs in having an additional 16 feet within the same hull length devoted to boiler rooms. This plan provided twelve 8-inch guns, turbine machinery, and a speed of 33 knots in a ship 600 feet long on the waterline, 61 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 11,410 tons. Note: The original document was ink on paper (black on white). The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book". U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command Photograph.
