USS K-5, a 392-ton K-1 class submarine built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in August 1914. She operated along the U.S. East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico area during the next three years, including the first several months of World War I. In October 1917 K-5 deployed to the Azores, from which she patrolled in search of German submarines and surface raiders until April 1918, when she returned to the U.S. In January 1919 she went back to the Gulf of Mexico, and some months later made a cruise up the Mississippi River. K-5 continued her service in the Gulf, Caribbean Sea and western Atlantic until decommissioned in February 1923. Subsequently laid up at Norfolk, Virginia and, after November 1924, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, USS K-5 was sold for scrapping in early June 1931.
