USS O-7 (Submarine # 68, later SS-68), 1918-1946
USS O-7, a 521-ton O-1 class submarine built
at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in July 1918. She operated
along the U.S. East Coast for the next four months and in early
November began a voyage to the European war zone. However, when
the 11 November 1918 Armistice brought the First World War's fighting
to an end, O-7 returned home. Postwar, she was primarily
assigned to the Submarine School at New London, Connecticut. She
briefly deployed to the Panama Canal Zone in 1924 to participate
in Fleet maneuvers and in July 1931 was decommissioned and laid
up in the Philadelphia Navy Yard's "Red Lead Row".
The Second World War National Emergency brought the now quite
elderly O-7 back into active service. Recommissioned in
February 1941, she spend more than four years on training duty
at New London. With the war in Europe over and that in the Pacific
at a point where U.S. submarine operations were less intense,
USS O-7 was decommissioned early in July 1945. She was
sold for scrapping in January 1946.
This page features, and provides links to, all the views
