USS Preston (DD-327), 1921-1932
USS Preston, a 1190-ton Clemson class destroyer
built at San Francisco, California, was commissioned in August
1921. Late in that year she left the Pacific to begin operations
in the Atlantic area. Preston deployed abroad in June 1925
and for the next year visited ports from northern Europe to the
Mediterranean. Returning to the U.S. in July 1926, she spent the
rest of her career in East Coast and Caribbean waters. USS Preston
was decommissioned at the beginning of 1930, during a major realignment
of the Navy's destroyer force. After her hull was employed for
strength tests at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia, she was sold
for scrapping in August 1932.
USS Preston was named in honor of Lieutenant Samuel
W. Preston, USN (1840-1865), who was killed in action during
the assault on Fort Fisher, North Carolina, in January 1865.
This page features all the views we have related to USS
Preston (DD-327).
