USS Staff, a 890-ton Auk class minesweeper built at Cleveland, Ohio, was commissioned in November 1942. The following April, she arrived in the Western Mediterranean and operated there until 16 July, when she was badly damaged by a mine during the invasion of Sicily. Towed to Norfolk, Virginia, later in the year, Staff's repairs were completed in February 1944. She then went to England until returning to the Mediterranean to take part in the August 1944 Southern France invasion. In November, Staff crossed the Atlantic again and was sent to the Pacific early in 1945. During the rest of World War II, she operated near Hawaii, the Marianas and Okinawa.
After postwar mine clearance duties in Japanese waters, Staff returned to the United States in early 1946 and was decommissioned in January 1947. She recommissioned in January 1952 for service with the Atlantic Fleet. The minesweeper made deployments to Scotland and the Mediterranean in 1952-53. Following another Mediterranean cruise in 1954-55, and redesignation as MSF-114, Staff was inactivated in August 1955. She remained in reserve until sold for scrapping in November 1967.
