USS Spokane, a 6,000-ton Juneau class light cruiser built at Kearny, New Jersey, was commissioned in May 1946. Following a Caribbean shakedown, in October she crossed the Atlantic to begin a northern European cruise that lasted nearly through January 1947. Spokane spent the next nine months in the western Atlantic region, then deployed to northern European from November 1947 through February 1948. Her third overseas tour, this time to the Mediterranean Sea, took place between January and May 1949. She was formally reclassified as an anti-aircraft light cruiser (CLAA-120) in March of that year, though that term had been unofficially applied to ships of her type for some time previously. During mid-1949 Spokane was employed as a training ship. Later in the year, as part of the Truman administration's reductions in Navy force structure, she was ordered inactivated.
Decommissioned at New York in late February 1950, Spokane became part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. At the beginning of April 1966, while in "mothballs", she was redesignated AG-191 in anticipation of conversion to a conformal array sonar test ship. This project did not materialize, however, and she remained laid up until stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in April 1972. Spokane was sold for scrapping in May 1973.
This page features all the views we of USS Spokane (CL-120, later CLAA-120 and AG-191), and provides links to other images concerning her.
