- Between the Holiday socializing and the 'flu bug, progress
for the year's last fortnight mostly got shoved into the last
week, thus producing one really big, "two week's worth"
  report.
 Our Pearl Harbor
Raid project moved forward with the completion of work on
  Post-attack Ship
Salvage. New pages added include those on salvage work on
  the battleships West
  Virginia and Oklahoma
and the target and training ship Utah.
Coverage was added on several men who were awarded the Medal
of Honor or were otherwise honored for heroism and sacrifice
during the Pearl Harbor attack. They include Chief Aviation Ordnanceman
  (later Lieutenant) John
  William Finn; Ensign Francis
  C. Flaherty; Lieutenant Commander (later Rear Admiral) Samuel G. Fuqua; Electrician
  Arthur C. Manlove;
  Ensign Walter S. Savage,
  Jr.; Chief Watertender Peter
  Tomich; Ensign Robert
  W. Uhlmann; Captain Franklin
Van Valkenburgh; Seaman First Class James
Richard Ward and Commander (later Captain) Cassin
  Young.
We also posted two pages of "selected images" on one
of World War II's most noteworthy naval leaders, Fleet Admiral
  William F. Halsey.
Y2K's last new ships include a battleship, two aircraft carriers,
two seaplane tenders and a British battlecruiser. The new battleship
  is USS Wyoming (BB-32,
later AG-17). The carriers are USS Hornet
  (CV/CVA/CVS-12) and USS Langley
(CVL-27). The latter served in 1951-63 as the French aircraft
  carrier La Fayette,
which provides an opportunity to introduce French
Naval Ships to the "Online Library". The seaplane
  tenders are USS Humboldt
  (AVP-21) and USS Matagorda
(AVP-22). The British ship is HMS Hood,
which was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck
  in May 1941.
Finally, a page was produced on another class of Battleship,
  the Wyoming (BB-32 & 33)
  type.

- Despite our best intentions, the week produced no reportable
  progress toward completing our Pearl
Harbor Raid picture coverage. Stay tuned, however, as it
  is definitely "in work".
We did take an initial step into what will probably be a multi-year
undertaking on World War II's Battle of the Atlantic, with posting
of several pages on the German battleship Bismarck,
  her May 1941 sortie
into the Atlantic and the ensuing Battle
of the Denmark Strait that resulted in the explosion and
sinking of the great British battlecruiser Hood.
Naturally, we have not neglected the U.S. Navy, which does, after
all own this collection! A page has been added of selected views
on the Essex class aircraft carrier Intrepid
(CV/CVA/CVS-11), which is now a museum ship at New York City.
Another posting covers the escort ship England
(DE-635), which sank five Japanese submarines in May 1944
and assisted in sinking a sixth. This record is unsurpassed in
the history of U.S. Navy anti-submarine warfare. Pages were also
  added on Ensign John
  C. England, USNR, for whom USS England was named,
  and Captain Walton B.
Pendleton, who commanded her during her ASW exploits.
 18 December 2000

- Our most significant new offering for this week is a multi-page
presentation of selected images of Fleet Admiral Chester
  W. Nimitz, who led the Pacific Fleet to victory in World
War II and served as Chief of Naval Operations during the early
  post-war era.
We also added coverage of two more men who were awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during
the Pearl Harbor attack: Captain Mervin
Sharp Bennion, who was Commanding Officer of USS West
Virginia (BB-48) and was mortally wounded; and Captain Donald Kirby Ross, who
was a warrant officer on USS Nevada during the raid.
Two new ships were posted: USS Arkansas
(BB-33), the oldest U.S. Navy battleship to serve in World
War II; and the British battlecruiser Repulse,
which was lost to Japanese air attack in the first days of the
  Pacific War.
 11 December 2000

- Further Pearl
Harbor Raid items added last week includes pages on the Salvage and Repair
of USS California, and the beginnings of coverage
on Naval personnel who were awarded the Medal
of Honor for heroism during the attack. Those posted recently
  include Chief Boatswain Edwin
  J. Hill, Ensign Herbert
  C. Jones, Chief Radioman Thomas
James Reeves and Machinist's Mate First Class Robert
  R. Scott. Also added was a presentation on Vice Admiral Homer N. Wallin, who
was in charge of most of the Pearl Harbor salvage effort.
New ships posted last week include the aircraft carrier Yorktown
  (CV/CVA/CVS-10), submarine Salmon
(SS-182) and tank landing ship LST-325.
The latter became the Greek Navy ship Syros
(or Siros) in 1964 and was recently acquired by a U.S.
LST memorial group. She is presently en route back to the U.S.
  with a very veteran crew.
Our final new offering for the week is a presentation on the
  British battleship Prince
of Wales, a warship with a very active, but very short
  career.
 4 December 2000

- The week's only new Pearl
Harbor Raid pages concern the Salvage
Work on USS Nevada. More coverage of Pearl Harbor
ship salvage will be added in the near future.
New ships posted last week include the small aircraft carrier
  Monterey (CVL-26),
  battleship New York
  (BB-34), heavy cruiser Bremerton
  (CA-130) and destroyer Helm
(DD-388). The latter was lightly damaged during the Pearl
  Harbor attack.
 Another Battleship class page
was also posted, this one covering the New
  York (BB-34 & 35) class.
Finally, coverage has been added of one of the senior flag officers
present during the Pearl Harbor raid, Vice Admiral William
  S. Pye, who was Commander Battle Force. Later in December
1941, he was briefly the Acting Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific
  Fleet.
 27 November 2000

- A few more Pearl
Harbor Raid pages lead off this week's report of new work.
  These include coverage of Other
Raid-related Events, views taken at Marine
Barracks during the Pearl Harbor Attack, and the beginnings
of what will be a fairly extensive presentation on Post-attack
  Ship Salvage.
New ships posted last week include two aircraft carriers that
saw Korean War action: the fleet carrier Lake
  Champlain (CV/CVA/CVS-39) and the escort carrier Rendova (CVE-114);
  the old destroyer Ward
(DD-139, later APD-16), which fired the first shot of the
Pacific War while patrolling off Pearl Harbor on the morning
of 7 December 1941; and the escort ship Cabana
  (DE-260).
 20 November 2000

- With the posting of four pages on Attacks
on Airfields and Air Combat, and the tidying-up of all outstanding
"loose ends" from previous weeks' efforts, our Pearl Harbor Raid
project is now approaching the completion of its operational
portions. There are a few items still to come, some rather large,
but these will mainly deal with people involved in the Pearl
Harbor actions and the salvage of ships sunk in the attack.
Three new ships were added to the Online Library, including the
  battleship Texas (BB-35),
  the heavy cruiser Quincy
(CA-71), and the old minelayer Oglala
(CM-4). The latter, which was named Shawmut during
her first decade of Naval service, was one of the ships sunk
at Pearl Harbor and later salvaged and returned to service.
 13 November 2000

- Further progress is at hand on the Pearl
Harbor Raid front. New pages are now "up", or nearly
  so, on Attacks
in the Navy Yard Area, including the sinking and damaging
of several ships. A few of the latter are not open as of this
writing, but will be within a few days.
New ships posted this week include the battleship New
Mexico (BB-40), with related coverage of the New
  Mexico (BB-40, 41 & 42) class battleships, the aircraft
  carrier Oriskany (CV/CVA-34),
  the destroyer Shaw
(DD-373) and the seaplane tenders Curtiss
  (AV-4) and Mackinac
  (AVP-13).
