halloween is here... it's time for our annual FREAK SHOW

Yup. It's time. And this year, Halloween's on a Friday so maybe your hangover won't last into the work-week.

Friday, October 31, 2003. 8pm. Our place.

The Theme

This year's party is an all-out F R E A K S H O W. Bring out your dead and your undead, your tentacled and slimy. Grab hold of Heinlein and Spielberg and Gaiman and Whedon. Give in to aliens or zombies, scare up some monsters and machines! Horror and Sci-Fi is the name of the game, be it television, books, theater, comics, art or movies.

We love this shit. We hope you do too.

On Costumes

Costumes aren't required, but they come highly recommended. Ya'll are all crazy creative people and we're hereby challenging you to come dressed to the nines in your finest horror/scifi geekery. You know you want to.

And just in case you're still wavering, we'll take it up a notch. We'll have a pack of prezzies and a ballot box, possibly even some pencils (but come prepared to write in your own blood, just in case). As the hours wane (probably around midnight or one a.m.) we'll take a vote and award some trinkets to the folks who go the extra mile... or just are willing to completely humiliate themselves for the amusement of their closest pals.

The final categories for voting are:

  • Best of Show / Grand Prize / "This Year's Winner"
  • best theme-fitting costume (most accurate)
  • funniest/goriest?? (can't remember this cat.)
  • most obscure geek reference/geekiest
  • lamest

Transportation and Parking

Those of you who have skipped ahead and read the directions (or those of you who've been by our place) know that we live on a small suburban court in snooty Cary, NC. We've been here a while now and our neighbors are mostly used to us, but we still don't want to push our luck. To this effect, we recommend that if you can carpool, do so. And when you do have to park, try not to block anybody in. If the cul-de-sac has reached carrying capacity, park at the top of the street and walk down. It's pretty easy, even in spike heels and a corset.

The Rules

As with any gatherings of many human monkeys, we do have to set a few ground rules or else chaos—pretty Chaos—might just set in. Sorry, but we gotta. Plus it's fun to make 'em wacky.

But, irregardless of the frivolity, we are kinda serious. If the party becomes a hassle because people are rude or break our shit, we'll stop having it or stop inviting quite so many people. And that would be a pity, because we hate to turn anybody away. So, please, check out our house rules before you head our way. We don't think you'll find anything too unexpected.

R.S.V.P.

Because we're making a lot of food, and because we like to know if you have allergies or issues, questions or suggestions, we'd love for you to rsvp. Send some email to either bascha@unc.edu or katann23@earthlink.net and let us know if you're incoming. You can check back on the guestlist as the day draws nearer; we usually mark down who's coming and who's not, just to try and keep track.
