Multi-instrumentalist Derek Torres just finished recording his debut record with his new band Towers, but before he can release that to the masses, we make him face down the five.
1. If your music were a super hero, which would it be?
Probably Aquaman. He was very powerful, but only in bodies of water. In many regards I empathize with that. However, I also prefer super heros like Wolverine/Spawn/Rorschach who lack a sense of morality, but still find themselves compelled to fight for their own sense of good.
2. When did you start to think music might really work out as something more than a bedroom hobby?
I’m very misguided when it comes to this question. The easiest answer would be, “when I played my first show at the local coffee shop in my hometown”. The more complicated answer is that I’m still not sure playing music outside of my bedroom will “work out.” I work full-time job, play in three bands (one of which is my own), and try to maintain a budding social and personal life. Needless to say my life has been draining and lacks a sense of sustainability. However, I doubt music will be compromised when I make a major shift. I’m really concentrating on my emotional and physical health right now, though.
3. Describe your typical band practice.
They are wonderful. I’m fortunate to have three very talented players in Towers. I write the bulk of the songs, but my band picks up the missing pieces seamlessly. Karen is very methodical and structured, often referencing her notes that she always seems to be jotting diligently, while I talk about song structure. Yet, she has a lot of passion and manages to give her keyboard parts a real sense of depth. Alex is a professional. He has a deep understanding of his instrument and is a true master of his craft. I respect his opinion and ideas about music more than most anybody. Sam is my main collaborator for this project and he knows the songs better than i do on most levels. He is a talented multi-instrumentalist, and often makes me wish we had the technology to clone humans.
4. Who/what might be a few inspirations or influences that would really surprise people?
hmmm…these things usually surprise me. Probably everything my mom listened to on the radio when I was growing up. One of my songs is very similar to TLC’s “waterfalls” melodically. I also really love “Love Fool” by The Cardigans.
5. What did you dream of being when you were a kid? (How ’d that turn out?)
Ninja Turtle…
