I received word of Job's passing through my son who lives in Wisconsin. I had spoken to Job about Christmas time, because he knew that I had a hard time dealing with the Christmas holiday because of the passing of my youngest son. Every year he would call and every time he called he would state... "you know we ought to get married again". to which I would reply.."we went that route and it didn't work out, remember". It became a sort of joke as he knew that we made better friends than husband and wife. To his widow, I will keep you in my prayers and if there is anything I can do for you, please contact me.

I wasn't really sure this was true until I found this site as I had asked my son to send me any articles and I hadn't received any as of this date. The world will surely miss Job, and so will we all. Life will never be quite the same. I was only married to him for 2 years (exactly) but I must say life was not dull. Valentine's day will take on another meaning for me for sure.

Job's heart I believe was always in the right place, his methods may not have been what I thought were correct but things always seemed to work out.

My family still cannont get over me being wife #9 to such a historical person but I was and he is of course included in my family history. Knowing Job, he probably has found my two sons and other members of my family and is in the process of "patching things up for me". He did this here too.

I still expect to pick up my phone when it rings and here him say.... "Heaven High" after my "Hello".

I once related a story to him that surprised even me... I had been living in Indianapolis for a bit and one evening I was cooking dinner and I heard a familiar voice on the TV, I went into to make sure that I hadn't heard wrong and there on the TV, big as life was Job on "Touched by an Angel". The big joke of course is the fact that he portrayed a fisherman.... we laughed about that incident for a long time. I had a bit of explaining to do as to how I knew an actor on the show, and the person with me was shocked to find out that we had once been married.. (I even had to produce the marriage license.). That was Job.

And Job, I am sure that you fulfilled your dream of "never having gone to Disneyland".

To my friend Job.... I am so sorry for the last time we spent together over in Ascutney Vt. You came over to see me and to see how I was progressing on my latest "PROJECT". You told me you were with your "NEW BRIDE" , You were as usual, full of your "JOB" enthusiasm, I however was caught up in my own personal trials and tribulation's and did'nt share in your new happiness. I wish that we could have built that studio in my building in Claremont.... I have no doubt that we could have brought to the citizens of Claremont a form of art and theater they will never know. I felt so bad when I had to tell you that because of my problems with the Claremont Fire Department and the Inspections Department we would not be able to build that studio that you so wanted to create. The thought of what could have evolved from that studio Is still with me today. I was happy and yet sad to hear that you had found a new space in Charlestown, N.H. I remember the day in the Tumble Inn diner when I picked up the Eagle Times and read that we had a "NEW" director of our local CCTV. Whom else but that bastardly rebel of the 20th century Harvey Marshall [JOB] Matusow...... I remember our first meeting back in Turners Falls, Mass. over 26 years ago when the Renaissance community was thriving and I was the young bar owner at the old Rendezvous cafe on third street. I can think back to our meeting again in Tucson when our buddy McCue was making waves with SciExpo and you were making "peace bells".... I wish I had gone out to the car and met your "new bride" I suspect I probably will in the near future. I've been thinking about you alot in the last week or two and I think I'll try the "JOB" attitude in my life until I'm "Called to spirit". Goodbye my friend and till we meet again Peace and Love......... David

Job,
I guess I am the last to know about Job's passing. I was in shock sitting in the Media Center at the Olympics and happened to hear someone talking about it. I knew Job for over 20 years. We worked on Native issues throughout the USA and many other projects. My favorite was driving with a caravan of 6 trucks through the Dakotas delivering goodies we collected in CT, NY and MA for the Indian children on the Rosebud, Standing Rock Yankton and Cheyenne River Reservations. To see him dress up as Santa Claus and sing Christmas songs among the 100's of people we came out to get some goodies, blankets, food clothes. With Job it was always an adventure. When I needed him the most he was there. the birth of my daughter..there was Emily and Job.
I will miss you..We never finished the Jacob Hamlin story; never got to do the film " Dutchess and the Coyote" a film about the love story between Job and Arvila during the McCarthy era.. It was going to be great. He wanted me to play Arvila..It is a marvelous story if any one of you want to help finish it.. Job I will miss your laughter and compassion when I'm in the dumps.Your magic.. your spirit/ your love for all people whom you walked with..Particularly your love of Native people and the respect you shared with them on the reservations.
We all now have a lot of work to do to finish where Job left off..if the work can ever be fininshed. There will always be another soul who whispers for help..listen for it and lend a hand..that will be our legacy to Job..to keep the fire of love burning .. to be hopeful in times of desparation..to keep our children happy and secure..to never take the government for granted for we are the government and can never be slothful servants. But the greatest thing that Job taught me was Faith.. go out in the mist of your dreams and never lose focus, energy or faith. There is a God , He has a sense of humor and He loves us all. To all of those who loved Job, God Bless.

Job, I sure miss you across the hall each day. I was so fortunate to have met Mr. Harvey Job Matusow in the last few months of his life. He was a friend of mine, but a true friend of my youngest daughter sarah, whom used to look forward to coming to my work and going across the hall to be entertained by Job for hours. His final legacy in life lives not with us who knew him in his last days as adults, but will be passed on through the friendship he showed a little ten year old girl. She was saddened when I had to tell her of his passing, but in reflection a few hours later, we both came out of this knowing we had been furtunate to have the whisp of wind in life that sometimes passes by unnioticed, stay with us for a while so we could appreciate it.

I sure miss the hours in the studio and office talking, and time in the lunchroom. I took our time for granted, and when all was said and done, I must look back and say never again shall I do that to another.

A great man, did so much in history, but in the end, perhaps his greatest gift to a ten year old girl, Sarah Pope.

I am sorry you are gone, you sure had an impact on me at Ammal's Garden, told me one day, by the side of the road in the Bronx, I would be a Jewish community leader, who would have known, certainly not me. We cleaned your Mom's apartment after she died, found lots of stuff, a true Bronx apartment on Featherbed Lane. We may have fought some but I learned alot. You gave me the oppotunity to learn about dreams and I have not stopped since, Sleep well old teacher.

I met Job while helping to arrange the conference for the Allaince for Community Media, Northwest Region in Ashland, Oregon 1999.

Job decided that I would be a wonderful live replacement for one of his strong woman characters and decided that we should marry. (I would have been his 11th wife) As a single mother with six children I had had a rather difficult adult life and was in no hurry to leap into conjugal felecity with anyone. While shuttling him around during the conference I remember turning to hime and saying "I believe that god sent you to me, but I do not know why" As this was a very difficult time in my life - I felt like a Job, myself.

I was willing to further investigate the possibility of a larger relationship mostly for the purpose of helping to develop SCAT in Utah. Job needed obvious help there. I agreed to travel to Utah to check it out! Job had an amazing array of out of date equipment. Huge video library, an animal shelter for those pets who were too small or ugly for the pound. All of this was housed at a huge nursery that was in a state of disrepair. Nevertheless, it had charm and potential.

I really liked Job's friends, in particular, those who were not Mormons' who were outcasts like himself. He was also welcomed and respected by the Mormon's. He ministered to kids in jail in Utah.

While there I had full and complete access to all of Job's records alone and uncensored. I was most interested in the Gandhi Peace Center. I was to be the director of the Peace Center once the vows were said. Peace Center papers were in order though stained. Most of what Job told me about himself was true according to the documents that I read.

When I asked him about the name Job he told me that he was arrested and put in jail and a wife that he loved dearly, I believe that she was quite wealthy, left him. He decided that he was not much different than the Job in the Bible and so took the name at that time.

I believed that Job was telling me the truth when he said that he had had a change of heart in the midst of the McCarthy era. My eyes and mind were not shadowed or crowded by lust. He was a friend.

After a couple of weeks my children and I left Utah, with a puppy named Uta, who had been brought to Job by the sheriff because she was too small for the pound.

Job and I continued to communicate about developing a relationship. We decided that the best use of our time and efforts would be a crosscountry documentary of his life. To accommodate this partnerhsip I bought a new camera....and waited for Job to arrive at my house in Oregon to go on our journey of his life. I was pretty excited. As the time came closer and closer Job became more absent in communication. Finally on the day that we were to leave I called Utah to find that Job had headed East with a younger woman who he had or was marrying.

I felt so bad for Mike, Job's sidekick in Utah, because he felt awful telling me what had happened. I tried to comfort him as I was relieved because I did not want to have to continually deal with emotional issues with Job as wew travelled. I had been asserting that I was travelling with him as a documentarian and was happy to deepen our friendship. That's all.

I knew that Job was lonely. And I felt that he wanted someone to be there with him as he did not want to die alone. I believe that Job got what he wanted. I also believe that he had trouble telling the truth when he painted himself into the corner, lifelong karma on this one. I believe that his interest/work with community access television and the ACM was the result of a desire to be of service.

p.s. I have footage of Job in Utah. And in a tiny town in western Oregon playing his Peace Bells at the Jew's Harp Festival. I believe that i also have him playing the Jew's Harp. My children and I learned to play the Jew's harp through Job. He is a man that I am glad that I had the opportunity to be friend's with!

Fellow Friends of Brother Job,

Found out from today's NY Times of his passing...am saddened along with all those who've known him through the years.
I met Job in Massachusetts in the early 70's, then he seemed to pop up everywhere I went; at Hilda Charlton's weekly meditations at Cathedral of St John the Divine, at this or that gathering.....always funny, always full of energy for whatever project or harebrained scheme he was engulfed by at the time..
After I returned from living in Israel, he invited me to come live with he and Emily out in Tucson and start a children's theater company called the Magic Mouse...Cool! Off I went.
Living with him was about the most fun a 22 yr old kid could have..I will never forget his humour, his love of attention and the outrageous..his love for Emily.... he was a Joy to be around, even when he was hustling you, like the great confidence man he always was, you enjoyed it even as you saw it for what it was. Few people have entertained me so much...and as I read the other postings here I can see that he had the same effect on many, many others too.

Rest In Peace, Brother. See you on the Other Side.

With Love, Buzzy Ginsberg 914 693-0095

Job was but an eye wink in his life in Claremont, but he touched many with his uplifting spirit and continuous smile. He had little in earthly goods, but what a life this man gathered near his side during the 75 years he had on this earth. He was a pleasure to know and a treasure to have been able to call a friend. He has gone to spirit as he wished. Thank you Job for sharing the last few months of your earthly life sitting in the office chair next to my desk and relating as many of your exciting experiences as time allowed.

I met Job/Harvey at the North American Jew's Harp Festival years ago, and was filled with joy to meet him. A great man. A kind & adventurous soul. A twinkle in his eye.

He (and his Jew's Harp Band!) will be fondly remembered.

The Washington Post has done one of the more in depth articles I've seen on Job yet:

The LA Times and many other papers have run the AP Wire story over the last couple of days but added nothing to it.

Knock on Wood Film Productions, and myself personally, would like to thank Job for all his and Sam's assistance on our first feature film "SHIFT." I was saddened to hear the news of Job "going to the spirit". I had had communications with Job when he was in Utah and was shocked to get a call from him one day telling me he was in Claremont about 40 miles away. I was looking forward to meeting him face to face and giving him some help with his work in Claremont. He was a special individual and after reading this guestbook I only now realize how special he was. Job, you did a job well done now keep helping those of us who still are left behind and need the help.

I just watched a video interview I did with Job where he scolded me for using the word death, saying I didn't understand what it means to "go to spirit".

Like someone else mentioned to me, I keep hoping this is some prank Matusow pulled and that he'll pop up any time now. Having lost two others close to me since September I've heard a lot of first hand stories of odd experiences reaching over from the spirit world to touch people. I have no doubt that he's still with us in spirit and watching over the friends and family he loved while here.

I keep expecting to see the news of his life trumpted over newspapers and TV but the news seems to be a bit slow to get circulated. I would think his story (or stories!) would make a good NPR feature, a biography show, magazine features... Please keep the rest of us posted here if you see anything like this on Job in the news.

Here's what I've seen so far:

The local Claremont obituary for Harvey Job Matusow is included below. The Boston Globe ran a story last Sunday. The AP Wire ran a story on Jan 26, 2002 which will probably generate items in news around the world and some more in depth features on his life. The New York Times is apparently working on a feature.

This link should run a search for current news articles on Harvey Job Matusow:
Visit our News Page

The Boston Globe article is at:

The AP wire story is brief, and can be found at:
Yahoo's News site

If this works it'll add a news ticker below with any new stories listed:

Ode To a Friend

I heard the news today
A friend has passed away
Happened just this morning
while a new day was dawning
He may have planned it just that way
to leave us with a brand new day

These still too tender
not quite memories
lay heavy on my soul
even though it was his time to go
Of that impish wink
that - if only for a moment
could make me think
that I was beautiful
Or his warm and tender smile
that touched heart to heart
then lingered on
like the melody of
an old forgotten song
That twinkle in his eyes
a spark of hope from
one so old and wise
Or the touch of his hand
that said without saying
I understand
These things I know
for he was my friend
He touched my soul

Rosalie

Job

He played the corporate game and
Bounced back from the fall
Took lessons from Ghandi
Had visions from Ah Mal

Some knew him as Harvey
Some of us him called him Job
Some wrote him off as a loser
Some stuck around for the show

Dressed in a suit or overalls
He played a winning part
Cause while he gently conned you
He also stole your heart

Though you may deny it
Somewhere deep inside you know
You never will forget him
Cause he touched your very soul

To Job's good friends all over the world;

His funeral was warm and loving. Everyone cried. Most of the people there knew him less than six months.
In the back of the room were ten local hardcore teens, and they were crying.
His old friends I saw were, Dale, Beth Hapgood, Frank Rozelle. If any more were there I did not see them.
I join you in joy and bereavement.

Job's wake and funeral were a wonderful celebration of a life lived full and well in the spirit of compassion for mankind. I knew him well after only a few months, as well or better perhaps than some I've known my entire life, he was ungaurded and gave of himself fully and that led others to open up to him in unusual ways. Job walked the walk of a true christian. He was a complicated man with a simple and enormous heart underneath so I offer to his friends and family this poem by a former Catholic Priest named James Kavanaugh;

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
who prey upon them with IBM eyes
and sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
who dream instead of snow and children and halloween
and wonder if the leaves will change their color soon.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
who annoint them for burial with greedy claws
and murder them for a merchants profit and gain.
There are men too gentle for a corporate world
who dream instead of candied apples and ferris wheels
and pause to hear the distant whistle of a train.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
who devour them with eager appetite and search
for other men to prey upon and suck their childhood dry.
There are men too gentle for an accountant's world
who dream instead of esater eggs and fragrant grass
and search for beauty in the mystery of the sky.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
who toss them like a lost and wounded dove,
such gentle men are lonely in a merchants world,
unless they have a gentle one to love.

"be at peace my friend, thanks for all you shared .....you are with your gentle one again."

A Message For Harvey's spirit

Harvey you were my first cousin, the son of my father's sister Aunt Kitty. Like me you are first generation American, and realize better than most not just where you came from but where you wanted to be going. Your life was a long and twisted path, but I have great confidence that not only are you where you want to now be, but that you arrived there as you wanted.

To have seen you lately, like a tree which sat for decades in an open field stooped and full of age, it is appropriately amusing to admit that one of my first conscious memories is of you as a young man. I was a very small child, and you had just returned from the war in Europe. You were in your mother and father's apartment in NYC and standing by the fireplace. With your mother's Boston Bull terrier scampering after me I ran in to see my big cousin, the war hero who had discovered his brother's grave. You stood there so tall and handsome and scooped me up in your arms and threw me into the air roaring with laughter and saying "so this is the kid Uncle Abe...you do good work"

There had been no McCarthy then, and you were a shining star.

Later, when you started appearing on television I would find my mother and father switching it off at the mention of your name. I remember hushed conversations that I was not permitted to hear between my father, mother, your mother and I think even grandpa Louis. I remember mentions of scandal, prison, shame and tears.

From then on you were removed from my father's family in his eyes. He would never again allow you to phone the house, come visit or even be mentioned. In his melodramatic way he was able to blame all the difficulties which your mother had for the remainder of her life on you.

My father never realized that we make our own paths, and the footprints we leave on the beach are ours, not the reflection of others. You understood our world quite differently.

After a many year silence I started hearing from you about a decade ago..........thanks to the benefit of free long distance calls on certain days you informed me. I know that in old age you were reaching out to family and memories of the past; I reacted as the little boy who had been told you were to be avoided.

But you Harv never stopped calling, and I was pleased that you and my brother Rodger not only reached out to one and other, but also told me that you had found in one and other a real "brotherhood". I am certain he is greatly diminished and deeply saddened by your passing.

When you would call and ask for assistance I knew it was not for you. I was able to understand that as time began to dim the evens of the 1950s you were spending all of your time, effort, energy and such resources as you could muster in service to others. When you asked for help I did not hesitate, all the while knowing that you lived in a world very different from conventional norms and demands.

I liked the sincere concern you evidenced in your calls for my well being, my children and what I was doing. I appreciated that you and my brother shared a deep and genuine love for one and other.....I believe that it brought great solace to you both.

I think now about my mother's favorite line about a wasted life.... about the rose condemned to bloom unseen and waste its perfume on the empty desert air. You did not do that Harvey. You LIVED life. You saw what you wanted and reached for it with the innocent hands of a child. You possessed strength of character, passion for life and heart larger then yourself.

Thank you for sharing with me that portion of your existence that is now ended. I will miss you, your kind is too few and far between...........

My cousin Harvey Marshall (Job) Matusow was also my first baby sitter. A couple of years ago I wrote him a note, summarizing sixty years of rememberances. At this time I'd like to share them with all his friends.
==============================================
Dear babysitting cousin,

Sixty years of memories:

My first (Gilbert) Chemistry Set that I got from either you or your brother, Danny.

First Danny and then you in uniform.

My first Morse Code sender that I got from you guys, which actually started me on my interest in electrical/electronic things which, in turn, formed my whole professional career.

Having my nose almost bitten off by your dog, Ginger, after I scratched her with danny's gold star from your mom's window.

The Mc Carthy days. Seeing you being interviewed on the TV.

Time lapses of years/decades. Phone calls out of the blue from various places.

Your mom's funeral and the bells.

Hearing about good works you were doing for people who really needed both a helping hand and a friendly ear.

A trip to see you while in Arizona.

Finding records at the Mormon Geneological research centers in and around Tucson.

Watching your Childrens' Show videos.

My glances of your life has been like looking at a patchwork quilt. And sometimes you just want to wrap yourself in such a patchwork quilt, give it a hug and feel its warmth.

And, just like AT&T's old commercial, you often just reach out and touch someone.

Love,

Alan

Well Job..Iam sure your quite happy now, being out of the body and playing with Emily..and I am sure there are probably 15 to 20 Dogs with you too. I want to thank you for helping me see the artist in myself and for the merry go round lifestyle weve chosen to live.
Job made things happen...brought people together ..we shared many many adventures . Many were deep spiritual communions: we experienced the Christ together, lived communially and devoted our lives to Love.
Besides having a most excellent radio voice and experiencing the cutting edge of the art world and the acting scenes of the theater and movies we also had a ball vibrating in the "grey" area of the law.
So my brother Job..enjoy your new freedom and I am sure that where you are,,we will follow in a moment. Your eternal friend, Brian

There's an update on the http://www.magicmouse.org/ site with a bio of Harvey Job Matusow. More to be added soon, also a preliminary copy of Job's Book of Ellen, A Tapestry of Love can be found there at http://www.magicmouse.org/ellen/ -- I'll brighten up the colors on that, this was just to get it up to be shared since so many who knew Job knew Ellen or at least knew of her.

There seems to be confusion over the time of Monday's memorial, 1 or 2 pm, I will post info as soon as I have it confirmed.

love to all,

Mal

1/17/2002 Harvey "Job" Matusow passed away this morning at Dartmouth Hitchcock(yboo) Hospital in Lebanon NH. He was my dear friend and mentor who taught me much about living to the fullest, cherishing each person, and making a difference in the world. He is with those who went before. Here's to you Job! Peace, Love, and Understanding to all.

This is a follow-up to my last message. Job (harvey) is still in the ICU at Dartmouth Hitchcock , which I've re-named HitchCockyboo because harvey would chuckle. I was allowed to visit him on last Friday afternoon even tho I am not family and held his hand and spoke with him for an hour , he is unconscious and on life support but I believe he could hear or sense me there. I wish I could tell you all he looks good but he is bloated from what the poisons in his body , I learned it is termed Septis caused by a perforated intestinal wall. The doctor removed the respirator on Sunday but had to hook it back up because Job stopped breathing. He needs our prayers to get better and our goodbye prayers if he chooses to go to spirit. I hope the family does not mind my reaching out to you w/o permission but I don't know who to ask and I doubt anyone is aware of where he is or of his present circumstances. Job recently re-married and his new wife could use some good vibes sent her way as well. Feel free to contact me via e-mail if u wish and I will share what I know of his last few months and his condition as it progresses. Peace and Love.

I have since sept/ 2001 become a close friend to Job Matusow in his later years as a co-worker,musician, and to my great delight as a willing listener to the tale of his life, and the many wisdoms he has imparted to me. I am writing, sadly, to let those of you who know and love harvey(Job)that he is in the I.C.U. at Dartmouth/Hitchcock hsopital in Hanover NH in a battle for his life. He suffered broken limbs from a recent auto accident and during care his colon burst, he has peritonitis and the outlook is not good. At this point only family are allowed to see hi. Please send ypour prayers and thoughts to Job at this difficult time.......he is one of God's gems on this mortal plane and has lead a selfless existence dedicated to peace and love.

Hi Stringless Yo-Yo Fans - Here is a snippet from my book: "AsEverWas" (A Self-Descriptive Biopaty) I hope you find entertaining. Hi - Harvey! Drop me a line.
Love - Hammond

It was through our mutual friend Jon "Hoppy" Hopkins that I came in contact with Harvey . The Ices Music Festival was an upcoming event at The Roundhouse in London, and Harvey, having been tasked with finding someone to design the festival’s logo, turned to Hoppy for suggestions and my name was on the list. I submitted a sketch of an ice cream cone with a human ear emerging from an oozing glob of cream. The rendering fell into the top three category, and I was subsequently invited to tea.

Harvey and his wife Anna Lockwood lived outside London in the village of Ingatestone, where they occupied the garden cottage on the estate of the French sound poet, Henri Chopin.

I was greeted by a rotund, bearded and infinitely jovial
Harvey. He introduced me to his lovely wife, who adjourned to the garden while Harvey and I sat down to a spot of tea. We spoke briefly about the festival and he perused the small portfolio he had asked me to bring along. Observing him, I sensed there was a great deal more to my host than festival logo design, and following the refreshments Harvey, an extremely articulate and well spoken man with an Orson Wells-like voice, loosened up a bit, and the fascinating saga of his quite infamous life began to emerge.

Harvey was an occasional stand-up comedian who invented a little toy called the Stringless Yo-yo. I told Harvey about my childhood encounter with his fascinating invention. The odd little up-and-down plaything was (and perhaps still is) on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in East Los Angeles, where, due to his association with my father, I was being docent-toured by the eminent scholar Erich Fromm and his wife, who called him her “Uncle Bunny Rabbit.” Inside the display case, Harvey’s befuddling toy rolled endlessly up and down the wire as Uncle Bunny Rabbit tried to explain its stringless theory to my preadolescent satisfaction.

Dear Mr. Matusow,

Offered a guestbook to sign, I guess I oughta sign. Just now I stumbled across this website by sheerest luck,
and I go "hmmm."
Pleased am I to find an answer to a question that has nagged me for some time. I had heard of the Harvey
Matusow who had testified for Senator Joe McCarthy (then later renounced that testimony, if I recall correctly?)
And being the hopeless record collector scum that I am, had found "War Between Fats and Thins". Let me take
just a moment to praise that album to the heavens. There's a special corner of my heart reserved for flaming '60s
period pieces, and "War Between Fats and Thins" enjoys pride of place there. Oh sure, it couldn't have been made
less than 30 years ago, but there is as much delight and good fun to had in its grooves as any other album of the
era one could name. I've been through two copies, have played it many times, and expect to play it many times
more. My thanks for the pleasure. Maybe I oughta track down one of your other releases.
Ahem, oh yes, the question. It was: the Harvey Matusow of '50s Red Scare fame and the Harvey Matusow of
"Fats and Thins" renown, are they the same? Now I have my answer: a resounding yes! and other curious pursuits
in the bargain.
Well, thanks, Mr. Matusow for the clue, and many thanks for the abovenamed killer album. I'm pleased to hear
of your health and cheer and continued efforts to stay in the bastards's faces. Keep on...

job,
hope that you are doing well. i was wondering if there was any chance
that "war between fats and thins" might be reissued. i discovered the
record last year, and it was one of my "discovery" highlights to be
sure. with the resurgence of interest in exploratory music, i think
there's an audience that would love hearing this music.

From Julie and Magic Nation Productions, (Hi to you Job)

Prometheus the Dragon, or the lizard who thought he was a dragon.

Prometheus sniffled the air. It was cool and smelled like sage and honeysuckle.

Prometheus sniffed again, this time lifting his head to catch the breeze. He twitched his nose momentarily. YES, SOMETHING WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. Prometheus could feel it.

Prometheus was sun basking. He loved to smell the new morning sun and feel it's dapples of new light. Prometheus was a dragon. Many called him a lizard.

In the distance, Prometheus heard footsteps. They were stop and go footsteps. He stretched and twisted his neck to see who was coming down the desert path. It was a boy. The boy walked slowly and stopped along the way to feel a stone or look at a sand track.

Prometheus went back to his morning sun shower. He carefully laid his head on the warm boulder. He listed to the footsteps of the boy. STOP-GO-SHUFFLE. STOP-GO-SHUFFLE. The boy shuffle-walked. STOP-GO-SHUFFLE. The boy shuffle walked until he was directly in front of Prometheus.

Prometheus opened his large serene eyes. "Good Morning," he said to the boy.

The boy looked around and asked, "who said that?"

"I did," said Prometheus.

"But you are a lizard," the boy said, rubbing his eyes with the back of his fist.

"No, I am a dragon," Prometheus carefully and quietly replied.

"Lizards don't talk," the boy exclaimed.

"But dragons do," Prometheus replied.

"How do you know you are a dragon," the boy asked, looking carefully at Prometheus.

"I never eat bugs, seldom hop but sometimes fly and eat only the fruit of the persimmon tree," Prometheus carefully explained.

"Does that make you a dragon?" The boy looked carefully at Prometheus.

"No, of course not," Prometheus dragon-smiled, "knowing I am a dragon makes me a dragon."

"You know you are a dragon, for sure?" The boy again looked carefully at Prometheus.

"Most of the time," Prometheus replied.

"And when do you not know you are a dragon?" The boy asked with a quizzical look on his face.

"When people call me a lizard," Prometheus said as he put his head down on the rock again. "What do you think I am?" Prometheus asked, with a large sigh.

"I think you are a lizard," the boy said, with sadness in his voice.

"Why," Prometheus asked softly.

"Because there is no such thing as a dragon," the boy said, with sadness.

"Are you sure?" The head of Prometheus shot up off the rock, looking worried.

He tried to look the boy in the eyes.

"No." The boy whispered, his shoulders crumpling a little.

Prometheus looked far away, and "then I do not know if I am a dragon." Prometheus looked wistfully sad.

"But I am just a little boy, why should you care what I think." The boy finally looked at Prometheus. "I wish you were a dragon,……but wishes like fishes just swim away. The boy's shoulders crumpled a little more as he gave a great big sigh.

The eyes of Prometheus opened wide. "There is no such thing as just one little boy or one little girl, he almost whispered. But there are children who feel they have no importance." A large tear stood in the corner of the lizard-dragon's right eye.

"What does that mean," the boy now searched for the eyes of Prometheus.

"It means that others do not see your magic," Prometheus replied.

"What magic," the boy asked in a loud voice, not believing what he just heard.

"That which makes you special." Prometheus sounded surprised that the child did not know. "EVERY CHILD HAS MAGIC."

"Every child," the boy questioned. "Are you sure?"

"Every child," Prometheus responded.

"Why?" The boy continued.

"Because," Prometheus said with great love, "every child was born with special magic, a magic to be explored and shared. There is nothing that is more important that our inside magic."

"How do you know it is there?" The boy softened.

"With your inside feelings, of course." Prometheus responded.

"Is that what dragons do?" The boy smiled when he asked the question.

"Absolutely." Prometheus dragon smiled back.

The boy now moved slowly around Prometheus examining him carefully. There is something special about your tail." He look to the right of Prometheus. He looked to the left, to the front and back of Prometheus. He stroked his chin to help him think. "And I NEVER have seen a lizard cry before."

Prometheus proudly flicked his tail. "It is a good tail, isn't it." For the first time, Prometheus got up off the rock. He did not look like a lizard at all. HE REALLY WAS A DRAGON!

"How do you know about all of this," the boy joy-asked.

"I have the same magic," Prometheus said.

"What if I call you a lizard again," the boy questioned.

"I can never lose my magic, it is just harder for me to share it with others if others do not believe in me." Prometheus stretched his great legs. "And oh yes," Prometheus paused in his great stretch, "if you do not see it in yourself you cannot see it in others."

"I guess it's the same for kids!" The boy watched every move of Prometheus.

"Yes it is," Prometheus soothed, getting ready for his morning walk.

The two began to walk the desert path.

"What does it feel like to be a dragon," the boy askaed.

"Big and small at the same time," Prometheus answered.

"Just like us kids," the boy smiled.

Prometheus nodded in agreement' "and when I am in the water I feel like the water, when I am dancing I feel like the dance, when I am running I feel like the wind and when I eat persimmons I do a great tail flick!

"Just like a kid," except for the persimmon part, the jboy said laughing.

The two went for a long walk that morning and had many discoveries of delight and tail flickering.

AND THAT'S ALL FOR NOW.

Happy New Ear, Job and friends! I'll see if I can get some of those articles I scanned and some exceprts from the Fats lp online soon. And a more prominent link to http://www.magicmouse.org/
Someone aked about Dick Higgins. I am almost certain he and Job spent some time together a few decades ago. Dick is or was active online a few years ago - you can probably dig up some info and links via http://www.fluxus.org/ -- oh, no... I see Dick left the planet in 1998, I hadn't known that until now -- see http://www.fluxus.org/higgins/ Dick was posting a lot ot the Fluxus list circa 1996 and one of his posts about Job was part of what originally sent me looking for more info on Mr. Matusow - that and Philm Freax pics @ http://metalab.unc.edu/mal/MO/philm/
Here's some other links to some works by Dick Higgins: http://www.lefthandbooks.com/four_windows.html
http://www.thing.net/~grist/l&d/lhiggins.htm
a web search turns up numerous other references and tributes.
Speaking of web searches, I just found this page that references Matusow's Beast of Business anti-computer book from the 60's: http://www.iisg.nl/~tvt/tijen04.html -- Job, you ought to leave some comments from the author on the Amazon page on that long out of print book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0723400601/qid%3D946877849/103-7432175-6629406 so that people get get your take on the book from today, in this weird wired world we now live in. Here's another link to a more recent article on our favorite Mormon:
http://weeklywire.com/WW/02-16-98/slc_ae.html
Looks like he turns up in an Ocarina FAQ too:
http://www.ocarina.demon.co.uk/Theat.html

have fun! It was great talking to you recently, Job. I'll try to get some updates happening soon.

lots of love and prayers for peace and happiness,

I have many powerful memories of early LSD voyages with you quoting Thomas Wolfe late into starry nights. We met again in London briefly(myself and Ken Green) about 1969. Years later when I told my aunt(a longtime member of the Party) that I had met you in the late 60's she almost had an apoplexy. Told her that healing emanates from chance encounters with Godface former enemies(she didn't buy it and died angry).Been a psychotherapist in private practice here in S.F. for the last 20 or so. Dear babysitting cousin,

Sixty years of memories: My first (Gilbert) Chemistry Set that I got from either you or your brother, Danny. First Danny and then you in uniform. My first Morse Code sender that I got from you guys, which actually started me on my interest in electrical/electronic things which formed my whole career.

Love,

Alan

I am absolutely fascinated following our chat and my reading portions of your biography in this website. You are a cousin that I certainly wish I knew before now and my mother who is standing here with me wishes that 41 years had not passed since you and her last talked.

Heard the piece on you on NPR on Saturday, March 14. I am a social studies teacher (high school). You are, to say the least, an intriguing individual with an incredible history. I was born in 1949, weaned on the fear you generated. I lived in Middletown, Pa., home of an Air Force base out of which flew B-52 bombers, at that time the delivery system of our nuclear arsenal. At some point as a six or seven-year-old, I heard from one of my Air Force brat classmates that our town was number 13 on the priority list of Soviet targeted American cities. I went to bed at night for years with terror in my heart as the beacon of the Middletown Air Force base flashed in my window.
It appears as though this was all your fault, but I know you were a pawn in the game, just like my anti-Comminist father was a pawn. The question then is the same question now: who's really running this country?
In 1999 I'm going to be traveling through Utah on my bicycle. Perhaps we can get together. I would love to talk with you. I believe you would enrich my life, and then the lives of all students I teach from that point on.

Sincerely,
Robert Graham

Dear Job,
Your site looks great! I can't wait untill it is complete. I feel allot
of people who never knew you can learn a great deal. And for those that only knew
the bad publicity of you can realize that you have made positive impacts on many lives as well.
Mabey stringless but not disconnected.

Job,
What a life you have had, and to think that there is
still more to come. I think you have learned from life's
lessons. "Love for your fellow man and how you serve Him."
This is LIFE.
I am just happy to be your friend.

Hi Job,

What a nice surprise to see your web site. How great the internet is to communicate on such global
manner. Your story is one that should be seen by all. My memories of our times together on so many
projects is so clear. You are one amazing guy.

Glad to see you have the chapter outline online. I still have some of the
FBI files copied here. About 500 pages worth. Amazing the interest
J. Edgar Hoover had for you.

Check out my website, still working with my platinum photography. All
with family is good. Kids growning up. Trees growing up.

When it gets real cold in Utah, think of taking a visit to sunny Tucson,

Warmest regards,

I read the "index" to the Stringless Yo Yo online.

Gee, it seems pretty disconnected. Is that where the "stringless" part comes in? What is the string that ties this all together?...like what is the driving need or ???

For instance, why in Chapter 6 did he suddenly contact the FBI to become an informant? Did he do it with
the intention of providing false information? Or for the $$? Or what?

It may just be that it is the "index" and not the actual book. I'm hoping that in the full chapters that he'll reveal some real introspection, do you think he'll do that?

Also, I would like to know when Chapter 6 goes online, since that really fascinates me.

Thanks! Jody
P.S. Mal and Philm "led" me to the site.

I remember Job's apartment in New York City as vividly as I remember the faces of my children at their birth. There was a string across the ceiling and a little toy guy on a unicycle holding a long pole kept crossing the ceiling from one side to the other. I remember watching the mini wire-cyclist for hours while I was sitting next to a merry-go-round horse who kept whinnying to me, trying to get me to feed it Wood-dough (tm), which to Matusow's consternation was the only thing it would eat. I have a photo of Job, taken by Walter Bredel in 1965. He's sitting inside the window of the first office of the East Village Other on Avenue A in NYC. He's waiting for Yoko Ono to arrive. He was Yoko's babysitter at the time. (Can you imagine Job? He was a clown entertaining the kids even then.) I know where Job is today, but I've lost touch with Yoko. I keep thinking it must be lonely at the top. But, Job's never lonely. He's always surrounded by friends -- even now that he lives on top of a mountain. I think he prefers to stay on the bottom? I remember his energy in those days. It was overwhelming. I remember the story he told me, and which we then published in EVO about Wilhelm Reich's last day -- him expecting the Ea's to come rescue him from prison. Job always has a story. He always has some preposterous tale, which usually turns out to be true. If you don't know him, you should get to. Call him, or better, write him. Be sure to enclose some money. There's no free lunch in America. There never was, despite what some of Job's friends like Abbie and Jerry might say.

P.S. In case you want to know who Job really is, file an FOIA request with the FBI and see what you get on him. You won't believe it.

Job, I'd sure love to hear more about your involvment in the literary avantguard (sound poetry, performance art) But more than that, to hear your take on the people, the poets (chopin, higgins, kostelanetz, cobbing, and all) what kind of poeple were/are they from yr point of veiw. Sometimes I feel that the poetry gets in the way and we dont know the humans behind the scene. Thanks.

the thought of a man who has been
around as long and as much as Job
is made sweeter by the knowlege that
he still hasn't lost the dream and ideal
of the lessons learned through the
journey.
even an old con like Job can do
heaps of good with faith in God and
an ideal.
- Job, you need some sound and
vid clips on your page to complete the
experience, neh?
much love- adam
