Title: A MONTE CARLO STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF CORRECTING VARIABLE CORRELATIONS FOR ATTENUATION IN CANONICAL CORRELATION ANALYSIS
Abstract: "The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects on canonical correlation analysis of correcting the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient between dependent and independent variables for attenuation in a specific structural model. Values for test reliabilities, sample size, latent variable correlation, and population correlation were varied using a FORTRAN program.
The proportion of central F probability values were compared between the original and adjusted canonical correlation analysis at nominal alpha levels of .25, .10, .05, .01, and .001. The Statistical Analysis System Univariate procedure computed canonical correlation summary values of mean canonical correlation, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis.
Results indicate that Type I error rates associated with the Rao F test are severely inflated in the adjusted analyses given low reliability and small sample sizes. Point estimates of population correlation values in the structural model for the adjusted analyses were greater with larger dispersion then the original analyses given low reliability and small sample sizes. Correction for attenuation is not recommended unless the researcher has measures with high reliability and large sample sizes."
