The Eater 11/6/08

Posted on November 6, 2008 by Staff

Time to order, Turkeys

A bittersweet note: one of the best ideas The Eater’s had for a holiday celebration in Carrboro — a tofurkey shoot — has been rejected on the grounds that it would be too wasteful and encourage violence against replicas of birds made out of tofu. Drat. The staff wouldn’t bite even if we promised to use a potato canon. Ah well at least that brings us to the subject of Turkeys.

The time to get your order in is now, especially if you’re searching for a locally raised and/or hormone-free bird or one that is particularly large.

Cliffs is taking orders now as is Weaver Street and Whole Foods. We’re talking fresh, here. Food Lion, Lowe’s and H-T have quite a bit in stock of the frozen variety.

More stores are touting the buy-a-complete feast idea. Whole Foods staffs a holiday meal planning table that opens each day at 11 a.m. They also have a fairly straightforward online ordering system at wholefoodsmarket.com/holidays/

WF’s fresh turkeys are going for $2.30 – $2.50 a pound range depending on size.

Weaver Street is also offering complete meals — including a vegan feast — along with side dishes, roasting kits and pre-roasted turkeys from Plainville Farms at $3.49 a pound. Vegan pies are available ala cart as well. Their fresh turkeys (veg diet, antibiotic & hormone free) are going for $2.49.

Cliff is taking orders for fresh turkeys and special holiday cuts of other meats at 942-2196.
You can also order fresh turkeys directly from several farmers at the Carrboro, South Estes and Hillsborough markets. You might want to jump on that this weekend, though, as they tend to sell out fairly quickly.
