Charged to figure out how to transform our vulnerable suburban community into a genuinely resilient urban one, the Chapel Hill Community Sustainability Visioning Task Force suspended its important work in mid-April (“Sustainability panel is at a crossroads,†4/15/10), primarily due to concerns about “carrying capacity.â€
The budget of low expectations
The Senate is still on track to pass a budget this week that overall seems to meet the low expectations for it, with more cuts to human services and education, as lawmakers rush to complete their work and get home to campaign in the most volatile political climate in years.
Letter: Smith Level plan can work
Smith Level Road is a primary artery for Carrboro, but the lack of sidewalks or even wide shoulders makes it a menace for pedestrians and cyclists. The N.C. Department of Transportation has a new plan that would change the road considerably.

Town budgets tap savings, hold line on taxes
Town Manager Roger Stancil released his proposed 2010-11 budget on Monday, noting that a hefty fund balance and savings built up after another year of belt tightening would help the town move ahead on some initiatives while avoiding a tax increase.
OWASA warns council of rate increase
In a report presented at Monday night’s Chapel Hill Town Council meeting, OWASA warned the council that its next budget will require a 9.25 percent rate increase. OWASA will begin public hearings about its budget on May 27.
Ike Andrews, statesman, dies at 84
Former U.S. Congressman Ike Andrews, who served six terms as the representative from North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, died Monday in an assisted-living facility at the age of 84.

Bigleaf again
I described bigleaf Magnolia, Magnolia macrophylla, last year (Flora, 7/16/09). The large leaves, arranged umbrella-like at the ends of the branches, create a tropical feeling in the forest landscape.

The UNC General Alumni Association honored a key administrator and three alumni last Saturday for outstanding service to the university and the association.
One forgotten area of reform
It will be impossible for state lawmakers to ignore the calls for tougher ethics reforms when the General Assembly summer session convenes at noon Wednesday. Gov. Beverly Perdue has proposed a package of reforms that are worth considering, though they don’t go far enough.
