N.C. 54 lot to require permits
On Aug. 15, the N.C. 54 Park-and-Ride lot off Friday Center Drive will become a university permitted lot. A valid UNC permit will be required to park in the lot.
Carmichael Street to close
Drivers are advised that a stretch of Carmichael Street near St. Thomas More Church will be closed until the end of the month due to construction. A detour route will be provided.

Local transit operators came home from the annual N.C. Bus and Van Rodeo victorious. The June contest gathered dozens of transit operators to determine the state’s best drivers.
Nature on the Bolin Creek Trail
I last walked on the Bolin Creek Trail in Chapel Hill in August, when I was excited to discover Polymnia uvedalia, bearsfoot, all along the woodland edges. Bearsfoot was well past peak flower when I described it in Flora on Aug. 6.

On environment and competing interests
I’m writing to express my dislike of the idea of paving the route along the most sensitive parts of Bolin Creek, as recommended to the Carrboro Greenways Commission by Greenways Inc. of Durham. My first reaction on hearing news of this plan was, “If you want that, move to Cary.â€
Firefighter conducts cooking class
Capt. Byron Greeson became the first Chapel Hill firefighter to conduct a cooking class at A Southern Season on June 8. With an audience of about 25 students, Greeson cooked baby back ribs, rosemary potatoes, grilled vegetables and apple crisp. A Southern Season invited Greeson back for a second program later this year.
