Pithy expressions about the heat

Someone just wandered back in from lunch and noted “It’s set to ‘Hell’ out there,” reminding me that The Carrboro Citizen newspaper is collecting pithy and colorful expressions about the heat and how hot it is.

Send ’em in, but keep ’em clean, though. Family newspaper and all that.

mama was aching all over this morning saying during that overcast period when it rained and thundered north of us, that we were going to get rain. now what? the clouds did not open for us, the sun has returned to further parch our land, and mama still aches.
maybe later?
maybe soon?
or is it that she’s feeling sympathy pains for texas, where gargantuan rain clouds cover it and where there was no place for yesterday’s “five inches an hour” (in houston) rain to go; where she spent 83 years before moving here in november.
we know it will rain. we just can’t know when.
