Chapel Hill preps for storm

Here’s the winter weather release from CHPD:

Chapel Hill Winter Weather Preparations

The Town of Chapel Hill is making for a winter weather event that is expected to start Sunday night and last into Monday morning. Roads and bridges could become treacherous as temperatures drop below freezing Sunday night and the police department urges residents to avoid traveling on roadways unless absolutely necessary.

As the rain turns to snow, the Town of Chapel Hill Public Works Department and NCDOT will begin applying salt and sand to primary routes, bridges, hills and Town of Chapel Hill facilities. Snow plowing will occur as conditions permit. The Town’s snow removal plan gives first priority to major thoroughfares, bus routes and hospital areas. Secondary roads are the next priority as well as hills and dangerous intersections. Once those streets are passable, Town staff will focus on neighborhood streets. Residents and property owners are responsible for snow and ice removal in their driveways, apartment access roads, parking lots and sidewalks. The clearing of private streets is the responsibility of the homeowners within that subdivision.

All Town of Chapel Hill services and facilities will operate on normal schedules tomorrow. Chapel Hill Transit routes will run as scheduled but riders should expect delays due to weather and traffic conditions. All Town of Chapel Hill employees are expected to report to work at their regularly scheduled times. Employees who are unable to report to work are advised to contact their respective departments as early as possible.

For more information during inclement weather, residents should monitor local media, the official Town website at www.townofchapelhill.org or call (919) 968-2861.
