Fresh off last year’s Churchkey Records release Sunny Down Snuff, the boys of Last Year’s Men– guitarist Geoff Schilling, drummer Ian Rose, and singer/songwriter Ben Carr–are taking to the road, but first they’re facing down the five hardest questions in faux business.
1. If your band were a young adult book series, what would it be? (why?)
Animorphs, because Ben’s a foxxx.
2. When did you start to think music might really work out as something more than a bedroom hobby?
When Churchkey approached us about making a record, we realized that maybe this could go somewhere.
3. Describe what keeps you motivated.
Well, on our last tour, we came up with a little six word mantra to get us through all the hard times: “go hard, go hard, go hard.”
4. Who/what might be a few inspirations or influences that would really surprise people?
Geoff is a huge “Silk Degrees” fan. You know, like, Boz Scaggs. Ben has recently been on a Slick Rick kick. Ian derives his drumming style from his heavy background in sitar. Montgomery likes BBQ a lot. The food though, not the musician.
5. What did you dream of being when you were a kid? (how ’d that turn out?)
Ben dreamed of being a fireman, but they didn’t make suits that were small enough. Ian wanted to be an astronaut but then he saw “Apollo 13.” Geoff wanted to be Larry Bird, but it didn’t work out. Montgomery wanted to meet Mr. Coffee.
