Gimme Five! Alanna and Eddie of Jews and Catholics

In 2005, Alanna Meltzer-Holderfield and Eddie Garcia joined forces under the irreverent moniker Jews and Catholics to create guitar shredding, bass thumping, furiously psychedelic rock music.  It’s been six years since their first gig and in that time they’ve released a record, traded a drum machine for an actual drummer (Tyler Reeder), and melted a few faces.

So sure these guys know how to rock, but can Alanna and Eddie handle our little five question hazing? See for yourself after the jump.

1. If your band were a super hero, which would it be?
EDDIE: As a two piece I’d say The Hulk, people were often shocked by how large a sound two people could make.
As a trio we’re more like the X-Men, we’ve been mutated and we’re developing new powers and abilities.
ALANNA: I have to go with Wolverine. Mostly because he’s a badass and I could liken his stealthy, metal claws to our unexpected, keep-you-on-your-toes bursts of pure musical energy. I’m not saying its exactly the same, but work with me here.

2. When did you decide this musical partnership needed to be shared with others?
EDDIE: Once I heard an upright bass aggressively bowed through an amplifier, around the same time we wrote our 2nd song Mirrors.
ALANNA: After we’d been playing casually for a while and realized maybe the songs we were writing were worth something. I don’t recall the moment but I think shortly into it we knew we would want to share our music with the public.

3. Describe the last time you felt really lucky.
EDDIE: I didn’t break any strings at our last show, that’s crazy luck~!
ALANNA: My wedding day last October! But musically- after our last show, which was our third as a three piece. It was such a fun show and afterward I remember feeling really lucky to be in a band with such awesome dudes and get to play music that I love.

4. Who/what might be a few inspirations or influences that would really surprise people?
EDDIE: Neil Diamond, but that would only surprise you if you haven’t been to karaoke with me.
ALANNA: Hall and Oates.

5. What did you dream of being when you were a kid? (how ’d that turn out?)
EDDIE:I wanted to do special effects for horror movies,I also wanted to play a guitar with a whammy bar really loud. One of those worked out.
ALANNA: A geologist, Nancy Drew, a musician….one out of three is pretty good, I guess!
